Faculty of Education and Psychology

Placements

Academic information

Each course at the Faculty of Education and Psychology includes a placement as an obligatory subject in its curriculum. This means a stay of a significant duration at a centre where the profession that we are training for is carried out.

Course coordinators and placement supervisors will work to ensure the high quality of placements and broad range of placement centres. We try to strengthen our ties to the professional world on a daily basis as here at the University, we believe we are working for the professions and future professionals.

Shared features of the course practicums

The practicum, the backbone of the course

A very significant number of people that enrol at the University have their sights set on a particular profession. The classroom can provide an important foundation of knowledge to this end, but it is necessary to ensure a solid and clear link between this base and the reality of the profession we are training people for. This is where the practicum comes in, providing the real backbone of each degree, designed to prepare students for the reality of the profession with the highest level of competence possible.

The overlap between the knowledge gained through academic activity and professional experience is the foundation of excellence that we seek in initial training.

Internships in the Bachelor's Degree in Primary Education are undertaken in publicly funded Infant and Primary Education schools that are recognised as training centres by the Department of Education at the Generalitat de Catalunya. The placements are organised to correspond to the three cycles of primary education (6-12 years of age).Training based on the realities of the school and educational environment facilitates the assimilation of professional, academic and personal knowledge derived from day-to-day practice. With this in mind, students participate in school life from the first to the final year, with a role in the centre based on the study programme, progressing as follows:

First year: This involves guided observation within the module “Systematic Observation and Context Analysis (SOCA)” and the support of the Tutorial Action Plan (TAP).The placement at the centre lasts three weeks (90 hours), distributed over one week in the first semester and two weeks in the second semester.

Second year: This involves participatory observation placements in which a global analysis of the centre is carried out - its model of educational practices and management and its relationship with the environment.Furthermore, there will be a first level intervention in the classroom. This is carried out as part of the module “Organisation of the School Environment, Materials and Teaching Skills” and the placement in the centre is spread over four weeks (120 hours): two in the first semester, and two in the second. In order to enrol on the OEEMHD module and therefore carry out the associated internship, it is necessary to have passed the SOCA module.

Third year: Supervised intervention placements. They fully correspond to the 21-credit module “Practicum 1 and TFG1”.The placement in the centre is for a total 270 hours during the first semester distributed over nine weeks (30 hours per week). The student designs, applies and evaluates a contextualised teaching unit at the centre, and carries out specific interventions in the classroom, supported and supervised by a mentor from the centre, with follow-up and reflection with the assigned by the Faculty. As part of the same module, a Reflective Practice seminar is offered in five sessions prior to the start of the internship at the school. In order to enrol in the Practicum 1 and TFG1 module, it is a necessary requirement to have passed the OEEMHD module.

Fourth year: Supervised autonomous intervention and research internships. They fully correspond to the 24-credit module “Practicum 2”.The placement in the centre is for a total 360 hours during the second semester distributed over 12 weeks (30 hours per week). The aim is to allow students to put into practice a contextualised proposal for intervention and innovation, which takes the form of the development, monitoring and evaluation of an educational intervention, as well as acting as class teacher, making the appropriate decisions for classroom management, and reflecting on their own performance and on teaching practice in general.Approximately one third of the practicum hours are expected to be devoted to activities related to the specialist subject. In order to enrol in the Practicum 2 module, it is a necessary requirement to have passed Practicum 1 and TFG1 module.

Internships as part of the Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education are carried out in infants and primary schools, and in nurseries.Training based on the realities of the school and educational environment facilitates the assimilation of professional, academic and personal knowledge derived from day-to-day practice. With this in mind, students participate in school life from the first to the final year, with a role in the centre based on the study programme, progressing as follows:

The practicum for Social Education is structured in two subjects, Practicum 1 (12 ECTS), carried out the second semester of the third year, and Practicum 2 (30 ECTS), carried out the first semester of fourth year. These credits are split between external internships and training activities aimed at enhancing reflective analysis of professional practice.

Practicum 1 (12 ECTS) is part of the module Reflection and Action in Educational Practice 1 (24 credits) and is carried out in the second semester of the third year. The learning activities involved in this module are aimed at enabling students to acquire the professional skills most directly related to socio-educational interventions and the analysis of professional practice.Practicum 1 is the first supervised placement in a socio-educational centre or service, lasting 180 hours spread over 2-3 days a week during the second semester, and for this placement priority is given to centres and services in our local area. The placement is interspersed with group tutorials and the completion of a range of assignments to be included in a portfolio.

Practicum 2 (30 ECTS) is an intensive practicum that takes place throughout the first semester of the fourth year, during which the student completes a 350-hour placement in a service, organisation or institution. The placement is interspersed with tutorials and the completion of assignments based on professional practice. Here, students may have the opportunity to do their placements in services or centres in other countries. In order to take practicum 2, students must have previously passed the third-year subjects: "Organisation, Management and Evaluation of Centres’ (first semester) and "Socio-educational Practice: Relationships, Communication and Intervention’ (second semester).

The teaching plan for the Degree in Psychology allows students to undertake their professional placements at two stages of the degree: in the 3rd year with practicum 1 (3 credits) and in the 4th year with practicum 2 (9 credits).Practicum 1 is designed to give students their first contact with the diverse professional contexts in which they may work once they have obtained their bachelor’s degree. For this reason, this module is based on lectures and workshops, preferably delivered by practising psychology professionals. The module also addresses the ethical and deontological dimension of professional practice. The opportunity to learn and experience first-hand how a psychologist goes about their work in the four most important areas of psychology enables students to make a more informed decision about the field in which they will undertake their external placements in the fourth year.

Practicum 2 is a compulsory subject in the fourth year of the Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, with a weighting of 9 credits, and can be taken in either the first or the second semester. These 9 credits involve a total of 225 student work hours, 180 of which must be completed at the internship centre, under the supervision of a psychologist. The aim of Practicum 2 is for students to be able to apply, observe and reflect on the skills they have acquired in the different modules and subjects within the degree programme in the key areas in which they will be working professionally in the future.

More specifically, students will have to work on the principles and procedures of assessment in psychological intervention.Mainly, observe and conduct interviews, use observation and administer psychological tests. Also, they will have to know the several fields of application of psychology, acquire the necessary knowledge to influence and promote the quality of life of individuals, groups and organisations in different contexts; education, clinical settings and the health of workplaces and organisations, and community settings.Students are also expected to learn to socialise and interact in the different contexts covered in practicum 2, coordinating with other professionals and recognising the organisational dynamics of the placement centre.

Practicum 2 should enable the student to acquire the knowledge they will need and a professional role that will guide them in their future profession.

The Pedagogy practicum is structured around the subject "Practicum" (30 ECTS) which is taken in the second semester of the third year.Of these 30 credits, 25 will be earned at the placement centre and the remaining 5 from tasks associated with the Practicum. Thus, the 25 credits to be earned at the placement centre translate into a 14-week period of 25 hours a week (totalling 350 hours).

Specifically, the aims of the Practicum are: to familiarise students with the reality of the profession; to make connections between the knowledge acquired during the bachelor's degree programme and the knowledge they will acquire in the professional sphere; to encourage observation and analysis of educational realities, and to acquire and apply professional skills and competencies.

It is an intensive placement in services or organisations related to key areas of pedagogy. They are programmed intensively, based on the guidance of an academic tutor and group seminars with other students.Among other tasks, a field diary must be kept, and practical exercises and critical incidents must be resolved during the internship.

The practicum is a key cornerstone in training Social Work students as it enables them to gain first-hand knowledge of the profession and develop the competencies, skills and attitudes it requires. The Practicum enables the development of the bachelor’s degree’s three educational areas: knowledge, skills and attitudes. The practicum's general goals are:

  • Interrelate theory learned in the classroom with practice in the professional world.
  • To include and apply training centred on methodology, contents and technical procedures with professional practice, taking values and attitudes into account as relevant elements.
  • To restore the necessary relationship between the university and professional worlds.

It is taken during the first six months of the degree's fourth year, so that student have already achieved an important theoretical body that enables them to make the most of the experience of their practicals. The Practicum is worth 30 ECTS credits corresponding to a total of 450 hours of work, which are specified in:

  1. External internships in placement centres.
  2. Supervision seminars.
  3. Preparation of registration and documentation.
  4. Compulsory reading of the Reading Curriculum.
