History

Paulo Freire Centre

1. background

  • 19-6-2000, Pep Aparicio Guadas, the coordinator of the Lifelong Learning and Resources Centre (CReC) at the Valencia Provincial Council, presented the “Propuesta de constitución de una sede del Instituto Paulo Freire (IPF-E) en el CReC” supported by some forty people hailing from a dozen universities from around the State as well as several socio-educational movements. One of the areas of work for the IPF-E in the future would be a Paulo Freire chair, understood as a forum for reflection-action-reflection focusing on the pedagogical and political legacy of Paulo Freire. Sebas Parra, an adjunct lecturer in Social Education Studies at the UdG, was proposed as a member of the future body's Advisory Board.
  • 7-9-2001, the constitution of the IPF-E, with headquarters in Xàtiva, was approved, and the provisional Management Board formed by: Manuel Collado and Emilio Lucio Villegas (University of Seville), Sebastià Parra (University of Girona), Vicenta Pérez (University of Cordoba) and Pep Aparicio (CReC).
  • 28-2-2002. The first full session of the IPF-E, which the statutes were approved, was held, the quotas of the associated entities and the composition of the Management Board was ratified.
  • 26-4-2003. A meeting of the Management Board under the IV Seminario Ibérico de Educación de Adultos y Desarrollo Comunitario organised by the University of Seville to prepare the proposal for the IPF-E meeting planned for the autumn. Sebas Parra, from the group of coordinators working in the field of the Paulo Freire Chair, was in charge of preparing a proposal for the Paulo Freire Centre at the UdG that promotes the creation of a Paulo Freire Chair at the UdG.
  • 17-6-2003. With the already legalised IPF-E, the formal process for the joining of associations, organizations and institutions will begin and the meeting of the IPF-E called, first as a matter of fact after the statutes are approved, which will take place 17-9-2003 within the framework of the II International Seminar on Adult Eduction “Ètica, complexitat i FPA en una societat planetària” held in the city of Valencia.
  • 17-9-2003. IPF-E meeting to ratify the approved statutes, to start the formal process of membership, to ratify the Management Board and to approve the areas and plan of activity. Sebas Parra, together with Manuel Collado (University of Sevilla), Jordi Vallespir (University of the Balearic Islands) and Pep Aparicio (coordinator of CReC and president of the IPF-E) is one of the group of coordinators working in the area of the Paulo Freire Chair. The proposal presented was also approved by Sebas Parra from the Paulo Freire Centre Creation team at the UdG.
  • 18-3-2004. With the support of a group of teachers from the Faculty of Education, the proposal to create a Chair was presented to the Dean of the Faculty of Education and Psychology at the UdG.
  • 20-5-2004. The creation of the Chair was refused as it was felt not to be the right structure to attain our objectives. It was decided to look at other options, two in particular were chosen: the creation of a Paulo Freire Centre, or the creation of an “Association of Paulo Freire lecturers at the UdG”, which (in agreement with the IPF-E) would act from the Girona offices of the IPF-E.
  • 19-6-04: The promoting group decided to create a Paulo Freire Centre the UdG formed initially by UdG teachers but also inviting some relevant people from associated areas within the Girona region. It was debated whether the Centre should be an Association of UdG conventional teaching staff or operate without any administrative formality.
  • 25/26-11-2004: Finally, and after some months of back and forth, on 25 and 26 of November, within the framework of a Session about cooperation and literacy, we publicly announced the creation of the Paulo Freire Centre at the UdG. A first working proposal to channel the debate in the first meeting of the Centre and the call for a first meeting on Wednesday 19 January 2005 closed this first stage...
