School of Doctoral Studies

Cross-disciplinary training at the School of Doctoral Studies

The School of Doctoral Studies offers a series of cross-disciplinary training courses aimed at providing doctoral students with training that complements their research training.

Students on UdG and joint doctorate programmes who began their studies in 2017-2018 must enrol and pass two compulsory training course credits during their doctoral studies before presenting their doctoral thesis.Enrolling for this is optional for students who began their studies before this time.

How: Enrolments are exclusivelyonline, as are academic supervisions, and carried out within the periods established in the academic calendar for the annual enrolments on the doctoral programme.

Cost: The courses are regulated under the Government of Catalonia’s decree on prices and therefore have a financial cost.

Places: Limited.

Condition: For justifiable reasons only, enrolment can be cancelled or extended (if there are places available).

Deadlines: Only applications for cancelling or extending enrolments on courses that have not started yet will be processed.Applications must be submitted at least 7 calendar days before the start of the course to be cancelled or enrolled on.Enrolments cannot be cancelled or extended where the course has already finished.

How: Doctoral students will need to access the Procedures section in the Virtual Secretary's Office, click on the “go there” button for the “Administration application” procedure, select the application’s area and explain the reason: Extension or cancellation of enrolment on doctoral courses

Cost: The cancellation of enrolment will not entail the reimbursement of the course fee.

Final rating: “Pass” or “Fail”.

Rating “Pass”:

  • You will need to attend 80% or more of the classes (attendance is recorded).
  • You will need to submit a piece of work at the end of course that demonstrates the acquired knowledge and that will be evaluated by the teachers.

Good research practices

This course will address the basic concepts of ethical theory, essential for the responsible management of scientific knowledge in current pluralistic, technified societies.The meaning of concepts like 'virtue', 'values', 'duty' and 'responsibility' in the context of the technical system and social networks are analysed using the tools of applied ethics, and new perspectives of the discipline will be introduced.

This course addresses in an advanced way aspects related to the structure of the language R, the management of packages, objects and functions, as well as the processing, analysis and visualisation of data applied to research. Basic statistical knowledge is required to attend this course: parameter estimation, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing (one sample t-test, two sample t-test, ANOVA, type I and type II errors).More generally: sample, variability, distribution, p-value and significance level.

The publication of a scientific article is an indispensable part in the research work.Managing the entire process, from the search of information up to its publication, as well as the promotion of its visibility and use, it is essential.This course presents a whole series of secondary but basic elements surrounding scientific activity and which are essential for advancing professionally in research: searching, identifying and managing the most prestigious scientific documents in their field of research; learning the existing methodological tools for preparing, presenting and disseminating research work and identifying entire scientific-communication ecosystems: media, research evaluation, etc.

The publication of research results is an integral part of a researcher’s job.Writing an article is not an easy task, and attempts by novice authors are often thwarted by a lack of a consistent and systematic approach to preparing the manuscript.
This course first introduces the world surrounding the publication of scientific articles (publishers, journals, editors, authors, reviewers, databases, etc.)and the parameters defined to evaluate the quality of journals, researchers and their work (h-index, impact index, etc.).
The course then provides clear guidelines on the organization of the manuscript and the appropriate flow of ideas to convey a scientific message.It also focuses on aspects of language to communicate scientific-technical results efficiently, and thus ensure that manuscripts are accepted and published.

More and more doctoral students are deciding to structure their theses as a compendium of publications in certain fields.That means students will need to deal with the process of publication during their doctoral degree, including anonymous peer reviews.Dealing with reviews correctly is no easy task.This course will present the key elements for understanding review reports, dealing with them and making the most of them for improving articles and maximising the probability of acceptance.

This course is a brief introduction to the basics of writing and organising scientific papers and how to get them published.It also describes the process of publishing research papers in journals and conference proceedings with the objective of providing research trainees with an introductory guide.

The role of the different stakeholders (scientists, reviewers, editors, and so on) is discussed and advice is given to help manuscripts get accepted.Students do different exercises to help them put the topics addressed into practice.

The process for the creation and management of the spatial data encompasses a whole series of tasks and routines that will be key in analysing and suitably representing a phenomenon that, one way or another, affects some part of the territory or has an impact in relation to it.Throughout this course, guidelines will be presented and different tools will be used to create robust and correct vector datasets, using the QGIS free software.And not will we work with the series of tools to obtain and create geometries (points, lines and polygons), but also tools that enable the codification of attributes and values ​​while avoiding errors and inconsistencies.Finally, we will work with the basic techniques for symbolising vector layers, using default symbology and creating your own symbologies, plots and styles.

Requirement: it is necessary to have passed the Cross-disciplinary Education course 'Creating and managing spatial data with QGIS'.

The aim of the course is to train researchers so that they can explain their results through cartography. Present tools and routines typical of the design of graphics, maps and atlas through the free QGIS software. Practise with the techniques of symbolisation and theming of vector data and raster.
The course is optional and can be taken in the academic year chosen by the doctoral student, whether they are pursuing a full-time or part-time doctoral degree.

Course aimed at doctoral students in the field of Social Sciences, in particular Education.At this workshop, students will be given guidance and strategies for writing papers based on the doctoral thesis with the potential to be published in indexed journals.Workshop aimed in particular at people working in the field of education. Includes content relating to the choice of subject and objective of the article, its structure, criteria for choosing the publication, the role of the reviewers and editors, and ethics in the publication of the results.The workshop is of a practical nature, with each participant working on their own research for a proposed scientific article.
