Faculty of Nursing

History

The first School of Nursing in the province of Girona dates back to 1936 and Santa Caterina Hospital, where a lack of personnel after the Pauline nuns ceased to provide care made it necessary to find other ways to provide qualified personnel so the work could continue.

Courses were for one year and the exam to obtain the qualification was conducted at the University of Barcelona (UB).

Later, in 1961, and also motivated by the need for more staff, the ATS School of the Residència Sanitària de la Seguretat Social Álvarez de Castro was created with links to the University of Barcelona and where courses were given until 1980, at which point courses were given university status and the school ceased to exist.

In parallel, in 1973 the ATS Women’s School of the Diputació de Girona was created as part of the Faculty of Medicine at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. The School started its first course in January 1974 in the Geriatric Centre run by the Diputació de Girona, located in Puig d'en Roca. Later there was a change of headquarters and the school moved to the ground floor of the old Santa Caterina Hospital of Girona.

During academic year 1977-78 by Royal Decree 2879/1977, of 30 October, the mixed nature of the ATS schools was regulated. Royal Decree 2128/1977 (Official Gazette of the Government of Spain (BOE) of 22 August) ordered the transformation of the ATS schools to become schools of nursing, causing ATS courses to become university qualifications. Through Royal Decree 3396/1978, of 29 December, the conversion of the ATS School of the Diputació de Girona to the University School of Nursing was approved, which remained part of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

In 1980, with its new status as a School and motivated by European regulations recommending that educational facilities not be in hospitals, the Diputació de Girona moved the School again to a building in the Pedret neighbourhood of the same city. Later, during academic year 1986-87 the school moved to a building in Puig d'en Roca due to the restructuring of the building that it occupied and lack of space. The School was part of the UAB during these years until June 1992.

Finally, a last change of location in September 1998 resulted in the School moving to the old Annexe School of the Normal School of Girona in Emili Grahit street, which it shared with the Faculty of Education and Psychology (FEP) until February 2010 (when the FEP moved its headquarters to the Barri Vell neighbourhood). Since 2010-2011, the Faculty of Nursing has shared the same building on Emili Grahit street with the Faculty of Medicine.

In 1989 the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona created the Estudi General de Girona, which encompassed all university courses including nursing. In addition, in 1990 the academic cooperation agreement with the UAB was signed. On 12 December 1991, the Catalan Parliament created the University of Girona (UdG). This began the process to affiliate the University School of Nursing of the Diputació de Girona with the UdG, which was completed through the Decree by the Government of Catalonia on 22 June 1992 and at which point the integration of the University School of Nursing with the University of Girona began.

The Agreement of 30 June 1994 approved the agreement between the Universities and Research Commission of the Government of Catalonia, the University of Girona and the Diputació de Girona for integrating the School of Nursing into the University of Girona. This agreement was approved on 15 September 1994, since when the School has been fully integrated into the University of Girona.

The transformation of the School of Nursing into the University of Girona Faculty of Nursing was approved in article 2 of order 84/2011, of 2 May (Official Journal of the Government of Catalonia (DOGC) No. 5880 of 17 May 2011).

The mission of the University of Girona Faculty of Nursing is to carry out three fundamental functions of nursing training:

Research: promoting research in the area of the Health Sciences and specifically in nursing care, fostering the scientific-technical and personal development of its professionals.

Knowledge transfer: aimed at conducting projects and working alongside the community, healthcare and educational institutions or other associations.
