Master's degree in food biotechnology

A sector with a future

The agricultural sector plays an essential role in the economic development of Catalonia and is of great strategic importance to its economy. The agrifood product industry is the largest in Catalonia in terms of employment and business figures (Department of Business Studies and Employment. Annual report on the industry in Catalonia, 2015).

The global social and economic trends indicate that in the coming years, the agricultural sector will face great challenges, particularly structured around new consumer habits and preferences, as a result of social and demographic changes and the process of globalisation and economic reorganisation, among others. Therefore, innovation, research and technological development are no longer considered an option in becoming an increasing and fundamental need to ensure the continuity of the industrial fabric and maintain or increase the competitiveness of the industry in a global market.

The support received by the Master in Food Biotechnology from the Food and Gastronomy Campus at the University of Girona makes it a benchmark master's degree in the sector. A research, teaching and services provision hub in food and gastronomy technologies, the Campus comprises a node that connects the specialist ecosystem in the territory and within the main national, state and international networks.
