Clinical Microbiology and infectious diseases

The research group on Clinical Microbiology and Infectious diseases was created in 2004 after a cooperation research project together with the gastroenterologists of the Hospital Josep Trueta of Girona. The main goal of that collaboration was to study the bacterial composition of the colon from Crohn's Disease patients. We have also worked together with the laboratory of Microbiology of that Hospital to investigate the presence of Mycobacterium in the biopsies from those patients. Later, we started to cooperate with the Intensive Care Unit on two programs: one to detect Legionella pneumophila in patients admitted in this unit with severe community acquired pneumonia and the other to study the microbial ecology of the sepsis. After this time working with different aspects of bacterial infections, we are currently focusing our research interest in the Microbial Ecology of the Infection. Our hypothesis is that infections are not monospecific, but they could harbor novel bacteria.
