Translation of the website

Good Practice Manual

The UdG website is published exclusively in Catalan.An outside company is in charge of providing translations to the other two languages: Spanish is offered using an automatic translation, as is English, although in this case the text is post-edited by a human being to ensure that any errors are corrected.

The Spanish version is not post-edited, as the company guarantees 93% reliability, but we need to be aware that this level of quality will only be evident if the source text is correct.

Bear in mind:

  1. Identify any words and/or sentences in other languages and mark them clearly so that they can be dealt with correctly.The translation programme assumes that 100% of content is in Catalan. If this is not the case, and we do not make it clear that this is not the case, the results could be disastrous.There are two ways in which we can indicate that there is text in other languages:
    • through a span added to the html code
      • if the text is with Spanish <span lang="es">Mi casa verde<!--fi traducció--></span>
      • if the text is with English <span lang="en">My green house<!--fi traducció--></span>
    • using the character «mi casa verde»
      • alt + 174 (open)
      • alt + 175 (close)
  2. Documents that must be provided in Catalan, Spanish and English
    • If we have a document that needs to be provided in the three languages, it will be the owner of the service’s responsibility to ensure that it is indeed provided in the three languages.The documents will be saved with the same name, but a suffix will be added to differentiate them.And they will be saved in the same directory.Example
      • llistat_graus_EN.pdf (document in Catalan)
      • llistat_graus_ES.pdf (document in Spanish)
      • llistat_graus_EN.pdf (document in English)
  3. Translation costs.When we make changes on a specific page, that page will need to be translated again.We have to ensure that the changes are really necessary.
    One way to optimise the use of resources is to put the year or academic year as a header, rather than in the text, for example.In this way, only the header will need to be translated, whereas if the dates are included in the text, all of the content will need to be translated again.
