Master's Degree in Environmental Change: Analysis and Management

Subjects and photographs

Subjects available in the next academic year:

Analysis and diagnosis of environmental change (mandatory: 30 credits)

Scientific bases of environmental change (9 credits)
Analysis of the climatic system, description of its elements and constituent factors. Space-time variability and climatic modelisation.
Impacts on the natural environment (9 credits)
Analysis of the impacts of the global change in ecosystems and the species that form them.

Impact and adaptation in human activity, territory and landscape (9 credits)
The current impacts, adaptation, strategies and policies in the different economic sectors (agriculture, industry and tourism), cities, territory and landscape will be analysed.
Integrated Practical classes (3 credits)
A real-life problem will be worked on directly in a real space. Students will work in a group and with the social, economic and environmental agents involved. The aim is for students to be capable of diagnosing problems and designing adaptation actions. During the practical classes, they will travel to the place of study, for the study to be carried out in an intensive way.

Module of management instruments (the student must study 18 credits)

Foundations of GIS (3 credits)
Study of the basic applications of geographic information systems.
Applications of GIS in environmental analysis (3 credits)
Spatial analysis techniques in the raster and vector models.
Multivariable analysis of environmental data (3 credits)
Knowledge of multivariable statistical analysis, placing an emphasis on their application.
Models for environmental management (3 credits)

Basic concepts concerning modelling: from conceptualisation to the calibration and validation of models.
Instruments of adaptation in land planning, urban planning and landscape (3 credits)
Analysis of regulations and instruments of territorial, land and landscape planning and management.
Adaptation and mitigation. Geopolitical dimension and public regulation instruments (3 credits)
Analysis of the political and geopolitical dimension of the main strategies and performances considered in the mitigation of and adaptation to environmental change.
Tools for the biology of conservation (3 credits)
Evaluation and prioritisation in the biology of conservation: conservation criteria and indexes.
Fauna: adaptation and management (3 credits)
Morphological, physiological and behavioural adaptations of sea, land and continental water fauna to the environmental changes.
Adaptations of flora: bases for their management (3 credits)
Strategies of plants for adapting to the different factors of global change: changes in the phenology of plants and the plant communities. Instruments for their study and management control and strategies.
Energy management (3 credits)
Efficiency and diversification of energy sources as determinate instruments in energy management, playing a fundamental role in the future of global evolution.
Environmental monitoring (3 credits)
Description of the instruments and methods used for the study of the atmosphere and aquatic systems.
Atmospheric emissions and adaptation (3 credits)
The different agents of physical pollution are studied in relation to environmental change. Research of information on applicable regulations, doses and effects on health is included. Practical classes are imparted on measures of the different types of pollution and real-life cases are studied.

Master's thesis 12 credits

MASTER’S THESIS (12 credits)
The master's thesis entails the completion, by the student on an individual basis, of a project, study or report that reflects the concepts and skills acquired during the master's degree. Research will be able to be made in a private company, to the public administration, or in one of the groups of research of the UdG who take part in the doctoral programme in Environment.
