Speakcat 

The speakcat is in a university context a course of set Catalan, with exercises and basic activities that discover the grammar and vocabulary of the language. It also contains exercises and activities related with practical aspects of the daily university life.

Parla.cat 

This platform offers four levels of learning of the Catalan: Basic, Elementary, Interval and Sufficiency. Videos, audios, games, activities with animation, can find it... everything thought to make the learning of the Catalan easy.

Conversation guides 

You are of where you are and wherever you go, we want you to enjoy this experience and you to take the opportunity every instant of your stay. In the Conversation guides you will find everything from the most frequently used expressions to the most practical linguistic resources for finding accommodation or any administrative procedure in public and commercial services.

Intercat

This set of resources - teaching materials, socio-linguistic documents and information on language exchanges and volunteers, among other aspects - will help to introduce you to the Catalan language and culture. It is particularly aimed at students on mobility programmes that are visiting Catalan universities.

Initial reception

The Modern Languages Service and theInternational Office of the University organise a welcome period every semester, just before classes start.

During these days you have the opportunity to attend an initial reception, a combination of training sessions on Catalan language and culture, and visits and activities that will bring you closer to Catalan culture and the city of Girona.

This Introductory Course in Catalan Language and Culture (3100RC0003/2021) is recognised with 3 credits.

Catalan Course A1 initial level (September)

The Modern Languages Service offers you this course designed so that, virtually and independently, but always accompanied by a tutor, you can learn the language through resources such as videos, games, audios, readings and grammar and vocabulary exercises.

The course also aims to introduce you to Catalan culture and society by means of a series of short lessons, accompanied by tasks or exercises, on the history, geography, traditions, gastronomy, etc. of Catalonia.

At the Modern Languages Service we plan to open a tutored edition of the A1 level course in Catalan language on a monthly basis, so that you can access this initial training regardless of when you join our university. Over the course of the month in which you register, someone from the Modern Languages Service will be available to answer any questions or queries you may have.Check the Courses on offer section of this website if you want to know the dates of the different editions of the course and how to register.

You also have the option of enrolling on the A1 self-study course in Catalan language, available in the Moodle classroom on the Babel portal. Someone from the Modern Languages Service will be available to answer any questions or queries you may have.

And if you already know some Catalan, you can also take the A2 level Catalan course, which consists of an online supervised work block from the Parla.cat platform, and a face-to-face conversation block.

We want to accompany you during your stay in Girona and help you to learn more about our language and to get to know us better. We propose two different and complementary ways of doing it.

Language exchanges

The language exchange is an informal way of practising or improving languages you already know or that you are learning, in which two people who speak different languages meet up to practice the other person’s language.

But it is also a good opportunity to live and to exchange intercultural aspects. In addition, the programme has academic content (2 free-elective credits) and offers you the chance to take part in leisure and cultural activities.

Catalan courses

As a continuation of the initial training you have received in the initial welcome or if you already have some previous knowledge of Catalan, you can follow the A2 level Catalan course.

This course consists of a virtual block of tutored work using the Parla.cat platform and a face-to-face block of conversation.
