Teaching is concentrated in the faculties and schools, and the departments deal with research, which is also conducted by institutes and chairs, at the same time responsible for knowledge promotion.
4.1 Catalan is the University of Girona’s official language and is therefore normally used in its activities.To this end, the University of Girona shall promote the full use of the Catalan language in all its areas and shall establish the appropriate means to ensure its learning and use by students, teaching and research staff and technical, management and administrative and service staff.
4.2 The University of Girona shall promote collaboration at all levels with other universities in the Catalan language domain and, especially, with those integrated into the Vives Network of Universities.In the framework of collaboration and exchange with other universities and institutions, the University of Girona shall promote knowledge and international awareness of the Catalan language and Catalan culture.
The University of Girona, through the corresponding language policy plan and multi-annual language plans that it approves, shall promote the knowledge and use of third languages, as well as guarantee that sufficient knowledge of the official languages in Catalonia and of sign language is promoted in the processes of welcoming members of the university community.
Article 6.1.The official language of Catalonia is Catalan.As such, Catalan is the language of normal and preferred use of the public authorities and mass media of Catalonia and is also the language normally used for instruction and learning in education.
Article 35.1.Everyone has the right to receive their education in Catalan, in accordance with the provisions established in this Statute.Catalan must be the language normally used for instruction and learning in university and non-university education.
Article 35.1.Teaching staff and students at university centres have the right to express themselves, orally and in writing, in the official language of their choice
Under Article 3 of the Statute of Autonomy, and within the framework of an active policy of the Catalan government for creating the conditions enabling full equality in language rights and duties, everyone in Catalonia has the right to:
1.Catalan is the University of Girona’s official language and is therefore the language of normal use in its activities.
2.Catalan is the official language of the universities of Catalonia, as is Spanish.Use of the official languages in university activities is governed by the Act 1/1998, of the 7 January, on language policy.
3.Under Act 1/1998, of 7 January, on language policy, the Government and universities, in the area of their respective areas of jurisdiction, must stimulate knowledge and use of Catalan in all areas of university activity and encourage all the members of the university community to learn it.
4.Under Act 1/1998, of 7 January, on language policy, university teaching staff, with the exception of visitors and similar cases, must know both the official languages sufficiently well, according to the needs of their academic work.The Government must guarantee, in accordance with the regulations in force and through the Interuniversity Council of Catalonia, that this sufficient knowledge is specified in selection, admission and assessment processes.
5.The Government must ensure, in accordance with the regulations in force and through the Interuniversity Council of Catalonia, that the admission and incorporation of new members to the university community does not alter normal educational language uses and language-normalisation processes in universities.
6.The Government and the universities must establish, within their respective areas of jurisdiction, programmes for promoting knowledge of third languages that can include not just the use of these languages in the university’s academic activities but also the range of subjects on offer specific to each degree.
