The University Ombudsman’s actions must always aim to improve the quality of the university in all its areas, never be subject to any university authority’s mandatory instructions but rather governed by the principles of independence, autonomy and confidentiality. The Ombudsman can take on mediation, work-life balance and good professions.
The Ombudsman’s powers and functions are to:
- Act on their own initiative, or at the request of other parties, in relation to the complaints and observations formulated by any member of the university community with a legitimate interest. When complaints are submitted that have not exhausted all the stages provided for by the Statutes, the University Ombudsman has to advise the interested person and tell them which procedures they have to follow.
- Request and receive information from the governing, representative and administrative bodies of the University of Girona regarding the complaints and observations made. All the members of the university community are required to provide the data and information requested by the Ombudsman in the exercise of their duties.
- Guide and inform the individuals concerned about the alternative dispute resolution mechanisms in cases where coexistence is affected by situations caused by members of the university community or by other individuals not belonging to the community but subject to the rules of the University of Girona.
- Carry out before the competent bodies, non-binding, proposals for resolving the matters subject to their knowledge and proposing mediation, work-life balance and good professions that facilitate a quick and effective solution.
- Act as an interlocutor and inform the Student Council of the actions taken to protect students’ rights, at least twice a year.
- Present a report, at least biennially, before the University Senate and the Board of Trustees on the competences that are its own, and draw up and publish an annual report on its own competences.
