Research career stages

Rs

Predoctoral research staff until doctorate is earned. Conduct supervised research and investigation with the intention of developing their knowledge of research and investigation methodologies in their discipline. Demonstrate a strong understanding of their field of study, are able to perform critical analyses, evaluations and syntheses of new and complex ideas, and can explain the results (and value) of their research and investigation to fellow researchers. The funding for these contracts can come from competitive application processes run by non-UdG funding bodies, application processes run by the UdG, or research and transfer funding opportunities through projects, contracts and services provision under Article 60 of the LOSU, etc. These individuals are hired on a temporary basis through a research trainee staff contract pursuant to Article 21 of the Science Act, linked to earning doctoral degrees.

Recognised research staff. In the post-doctoral stage but not fully independent. In addition to trainee research staff knowledge, they demonstrate a systematic understanding of a field of study and the domain of research and investigation associated with that field, have made contributions through original research and investigation that expand the frontiers of knowledge, and have the ability to communicate with peers and explain the results of their research and investigation to the research community. The UdG distinguishes between post-doctoral research staff (R2A) for individuals who have just earned their doctoral degrees, and junior research staff or those in a ‘tenure track’ position (R2B).

R3 - Established research staff. Have developed a high level of independence. In addition to the knowledge of recognised research and investigation staff, they have a stable reputation based on research and investigation excellence in their field, identify problems and research and investigation opportunities within their area of expertise, conduct research and investigation independently, and can lead projects, contracts, and research and investigation agreements, both individual and collaborative, and organise workshops or conferences. This contract can be accessed through competitive recruitment from funding institutions or through public selection processes for teaching staff. Hired through a distinguished research staff contract pursuant to Article 22 of the Science Act, a distinguished teaching staff contract pursuant to Article 84 of the LOSU, or as tenured university teaching staff (Article 68 of the LOSU) or adjunct teaching staff (Article 82 of the LOSU and Article 47 of the Catalan Universities Act).

R4 - Leading research staff. Lead their line of research or field of investigation. In addition to the knowledge of established research staff, they have an international reputation based on research and investigation excellence in their field, demonstrate critical judgement in identifying and carrying out research and investigation activities, make a substantial contribution to their field of research and investigation, and develop a strategic vision on the future of their field of research and investigation. This contract can be accessed through recruitment in competitive application processes run by funding institutions or through public teaching staff selection processes. Hired through a distinguished research staff contract pursuant to Article 23 of the Science Act, a distinguished teaching staff contract pursuant to Article 84 of the LOSU, or as tenured university teaching staff or as a university full professor (Article 68 of the LOSU) or adjunct teaching staff or as a full professor (Article 87 of the LOSU and Articles 46 and 47 of the Catalan Universities Act).
