Engineering of Fluids, Energy and Environment Research Group- GREFEMA

Installations

Laboratories and equipment

We have modern facilities for characterising and simulating thermal and acoustic behaviour, and for analysing the dynamic behaviour of fluids. In these facilities we provide a service to companies and carry out our research activities.

Computing cluster

A cluster is a group of interconnected computers that enable large quantities of data to be processed, something that is essential for carrying out scientific activities that require the simultaneous processing of numerous complex calculations such as those that govern fluid-dynamic behaviour.

The new cluster, formed of two Intel® Xeon® Platinum 8260 Processors, has a calculation capacity that is10 times more powerful than the previous FRAM.This enables the GREFEMA to improve its research infrastructures to adapt them to ever more demanding computing needs, and at the same time reduces the energy costs associated with their use.

Instrumentation

We have portable measuring instruments for in situ data collection.

  • Fume analysis, CO, CO2 and temperature and humidity probe.
  • Instrumentation climate data, anemometers and ultrasonic flow meter.
  • Thermographic camera.

Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV)

The particle image velocimetry (PIV) is an optical method of flow visualization used in research. It is used to obtain instantaneous velocity measurements and related properties in fluids. The fluid is seeded with tracer particles which, for sufficiently small particles, are assumed to faithfully follow the flow dynamics. The fluid with entrained particles is illuminated so that particles are visible. The motion of the seeding particles is used to calculate speed and direction (the velocity field) of the flow being studied.

Wind tunnel

A wind tunnel or aerodynamic tunnel is a tool used in aerodynamic research to study the effects of air moving past solid objects. This tool is used to simulate the conditions that the object of the research will experience in a real situation. In a wind tunnel, the test object or model remains stationary while the air or gas moves around it.It is used to study the effects of air moving past solid objects, such as blades, ailerons, scale models, heat sinks, etc.

Lubricant analysis

Lubricant analysis is a task that is part of predictive maintenance, an activity which in many cases is required to check the condition of the internal components of a machine, and more specifically the elements that rub against each other such as bearing pads and bearings.

  • Lubricant analysis-based predictive maintenance equipment: Ferrometrics PREDICT Technologies + Ferrography + 4 SULAB isothermal baths.
  • Lubricant analysis-based predictive maintenance equipment: grease analyser.
  • Optic Microscope: SULAB.
  • Brookfield digital viscometer

Acoustics

GREFEMA has produced noise maps in many fields and sectors, from the modelling of the acoustic impact of road, railway and airport transport infrastructures, to the creation of acoustic maps within industries or musical events.

  • CESVA SC30 Sound level meter and spectrum analyser.
  • CESVA BP100 omni-directional loud speaker.
  • CESVA AP600 amplifier and noise generator.
  • 01db Duo smart noise monitor.
  • CADNA-A and Mithra acoustic prediction software.

Laboratories

The group has a diverse range of unique pieces of equipment that enable further analysis of heat recovery as flow bank with temperature control. Particle Image Velocimetry, test bench for thermoelectric modules, thermoelectric parameter measuring equipments, etc.

  • Fuel and Lubricant Analysis Laboratory.
  • Fluid Mechanics Laboratory.
  • Pneumatics Laboratory.
  • Test bench for Thermal Engines.
  • Heat and Cold Laboratory.
  • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) laboratory.
