Teaching is concentrated in the faculties and schools, and the departments deal with research, which is also conducted by institutes and chairs, at the same time responsible for knowledge promotion.
The Research Group in Fluids Engineering, Energy and Environment at the University of Girona (GREFEMA) works on several lines of applied research, offering solutions in collaboration with enterprises, bodies and external institutes.
Our research and investigation covers three areas of major technical interest: fluid engineering, energy and environment. We work in the following areas: fluid dynamics, turbomachinery, heat engines, renewable energies, heat transfer and environmental acoustics.
We accurately simulate a wide range of problems related to the water industry and the environment, from large hydroelectric power projects to turbomachinery to valves.
Simulation can play a crucial role in testing design options, helping to reduce complexity and focusing efforts on optimising solutions. Insights gained from numerically testing different design options can save both time and money.
In the field of energy, we can help to design and optimise complete thermal and/or hydraulic systems, using computational fluid dynamics and CFD computations. We are able to simulate objects in movement under the effect of gases or liquids, floating elements, heat exchangers, etc., allowing our clients to achieve complete solutions in a short period of time.
GREFEMA has produced noise maps in many fields and sectors, from the modelling of the acoustic impact of road, railway and airport transport infrastructures, to the creation of acoustic maps within industries or musical events.
GREFEMA has worked on the identification of noise sources in many different areas; for example on railways, creating noise maps for conventional or high speed trains, as well as in industrial environments to distinguish noise emitted by machinery.
GREFEMA has worked on improving the acoustic quality of enclosed spaces, studying the influence of room absorption on reverberation time and intelligibility.
