Master in Water Resources Science and Technology

Learning objectives

The Master in Water Resources Science and Technology is aimed at training professionals with a multidisciplinary profile that allows them to take on the current and future challenges of water-resources management, by enabling their incorporation into the job market and world of research (in public or private centres), and developing its activity in aspects directly or indirectly relating to water, with greater emphasis on science or engineering depending on the itinerary that is chosen.

It also aims to provide students with tools and skills that enable them to take on complex problems through a critical analysis of existing information, manage uncertainty, take decisions (individually and as a team) and adapt to the constant changes of paradigm in the field of water resources science and technology. Communication and responsibility and the search for and use of reliable sources of knowledge are worked on under the educational method of problem-based teaching.

Specific skills

  1. Analysing the various uses of water based on knowledge and the correct interpretation of the territorial, economic and/or legal context
  2. Fitting the existing interrelations between the various types of water systems into a conceptual water-balance model, by identifying and quantifying mankind's various uses (use, exploitation, pressure and impact) of these water resources.
  3. Optimally identifying, planning and managing the urban water cycle and its main infrastructures, taking efficiency, sustainability and innovation aspects into consideration.
  4. Discussing the innovative advances of science and technology in the water sector and market trends.
  5. Knowing and assessing the effect of the natural and anthropogenic stressors on river and lenitic ecosystems.
  6. Assessing the ecological state of a water mass based on the use of physico-chemical and biological indicators.
  7. Applying the functioning of the new information and communication technologies to water processes.
  8. Designing a project in the water sector intended for defined and measurable goals, attending to the needs of interest groups and founded on analysis of the environment and organisational capacity.

  1. Being original in developing and/or applying ideas based on the acquisition of expert knowledge in the subject area
  2. Bringing up innovative solutions to completely new or little-known problems in broad and multidisciplinary contexts
  3. Formulating solid opinions from professional and socially responsible points of view, based on the integration of knowledge and information that may be incomplete or limited.
  4. Communicating through reasoned arguments and clearly before specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  5. Having the necessary learning skills to progress independently in acquiring knowledge and skills.
  6. Preparing and developing studies and/or projects relating to water resources by taking account of social, economic and sustainability aspects.
  7. Independently selecting sources and information relevant to their own field of knowledge so as to meet specific goals.
  8. Facilitating synergy in cooperative work and actively taking part in group work.
  9. Actively taking part in the drafting of professional, scientific, or outreach works.
