Admission with foreign degrees

Students with foreign degrees that have not been officially recognised can also be admitted onto the doctoral programmes. Because of this, when filling in the online application form on the website of the School of Doctoral Studies in the established time frame, they will have to attach the following documentation:

  1. National ID, foreign-national identification (NIE) or valid passport.
  2. Bachelor's degree studies: university bachelor's degree or equivalent, and academic certification where the value scale of reference figures appears.
  3. Postgraduate studies: university master's degree and academic certification where the value scale of reference figures appears or another doctoral degree.
  4. In the case of possessing a certificate obtained in foreign educational systems belonging to the European Higher Education Area (EEES), the documents presented must accredit level 7 of the European Qualification Framework, providing the certificate entitles the holder to access doctoral studies in the country of issue.
  5. In the case of possessing a certificate obtained in foreign educational systems outside of the European Higher Education Area, with the documents provided the University has to be able to check that this certificate accredits a level of education equivalent to the Spanish official university master's degree certificate and that it entitles the holder to access doctoral studies in the country of issue. If this is not the case, the university will ask the interested party for a university certificate from the country of issue, indicating exactly the aforementioned.

If documents 2 and 3 above are not written in any of the official languages of this country (Catalan or Spanish), they must be translated by one of the following:

However:

  • If the original documentation is issued by the university of origin in English, no translation is required.
  • The academic documentation will also be accepted if it is translated into English.

All this documentation (including translations) must be validated by the pertinent authorities. The legalisation procedures for the attached documentation vary depending on the country where the bachelor's degree or equivalent studies were completed:

  1. European Union member countries or signatories of the agreement on the European economic space (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway). For documents issued in these countries no kind of legalisation will be necessary.
  2. Countries that have subscribed to the Hague Convention. The documents must include the Hague Apostille, issued by the competent authorities of the country of origin.Following the departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union on 1 January 2021, European Parliament and of the Council of 6 July 2016 on promoting the free movement of citizens by simplifying the requirements for presenting certain public documents in the European Union and amending Regulation (EU) No 1024/2012. As a result, British documents presented must feature The Hague apostille of 5 October 1961.
  3. Countries that have subscribed to the Andrés Bello Convention. When the country is also a signatory to the Hague Convention, the simpler procedure established in this agreement can be followed. Otherwise, the documents must be legalised through diplomatic channels, to which end they must be submitted to the following organisations:
    • The Ministry of Education of the country of origin, for degrees and certificates of studies.
    • The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country where the documents were issued.
    • Any diplomatic or consular representative of Spain abroad.
  4. Other countries: The documents must be legalised through diplomatic channels, to which end they must be submitted to the following organisations:
    • The Ministry of Education of the country of origin, for degrees and certificates of studies, and the corresponding ministry for birth and nationality certificates.
    • The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country where the documents were issued.
    • Any diplomatic or consular representative of Spain abroad.

The documents issued by diplomatic or consular authorities of countries other than Spain must be legalised by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.

The School of Doctoral Studies will review this documentation and verify that the access requirements are met.

Once the student is admitted to the doctoral programme they will have to provide their original academic document for the School of Doctoral Studies, attached at the point the pre-enrolment process is completed. It will not be necessary to provide documents of studies successfully completed at the UdG. This will be essential for requesting the certificate of doctoral studies when the time comes.
