Lecture: Smart homes who become smarter than we are

KNX is an open standard for home automation for over more than 28 years. In the lab Smart Buildings & IOT at University Odisee Ghent we do work over more than 15 years with this system. During this talk the difference between an open and closed home automation system will be explained and how to integrate it in a real live situation.
In the context of sustainable energy and energy saving measurements KNX will be situated and all possible solutions will be explained. Beside the well-known controlling of lights, shutters and room temperature, KNX offers a lot of more advantages and connections to other systems such as voice control, IOT devices etc.
The smart home can be controlled by an easy-to-use interface. Managing can be done by smartphone or tablet. We take also a look at the secure part of an installation.
At last: how will we react and will be changing our habits when our home becomes maybe even smarter than we are? What happens if our house is acting while we as habitants don’t know exactly why but it is for the better such as reducing energy consuming or exchanging energy with my neighbor? Can a robot be a part of our automated house? And what with our privacy and control?
Technology is constantly evolving, so it is our task to know how to handle with it in a smart and wise way. This seminar shows you the different possibilities for the future.

Seminar: New learning methods for a higher success with the students

In our constantly changing society, learning methods are also changing. It isn’t easy to keep attention for a long time during classic presentations and the return on investment is often very low.
How can better this situation in which students can learn in a safe learning environment? The first thing is to getting know your public, even better if you know each student personally with his own talents and gifts. Beside this, the student also has a learning style: one likes to hear this to be said, another likes to study in a course and again another likes to learn together with a friend.
In this seminar, different answers to this questions will be explain by various learning and teaching methods. Professors these days almost have to perform a show to keep the audience awake. Where is the frontier between ex cathedra lessons and a real show with movies, quizzes and funny storytelling? Which method can I use during a lab or project? Can I use all methods in all kind of courses? And how can we reach almost every student, even if we know they are all different types of persons? And what to do if they work in a team? Being aware of their needs is a first step.
Digital learning becomes one big future learning opportunity such as webinars, YouTube channels, online sharing platforms etc. Even if digitalization is becoming standard, live contact and being accessible to students remain very important. The professor nowadays is a coach to guide students through their path towards their degree.
In this seminar a lot of tools are explained, benefits and pitfalls, and the most interesting is that when you want to help a student in his learning process, just ask in which way you can do this and be open to receive for feedback. This seminar shows you how to realize all of this in practice.
