Underwater Technology Unit

UTS

The Unit of Underwater Technology (UTS) is part of the Research Technical Services (STR) of the UdG, which encompass a total of seven units that give support to different specific techniques. 
 

The unit is created at the beginning of 2013 as fruit of the experience accumulated during the last years in the field of the robotics and underwater vision for the Group of Computer Vision and Robotics (VICOROB) in the Centre of Research in Underwater Robotics (CIRS) of the University of Girona. 
 

The objective of the unit is to give service to groups of research of the UdG, institutions and companies through the technical infrastructures, equipments, and staff that this orders.

Available equipment

The Unit of Underwater Technology offers its users (so much to the staff of the UdG as external customers) access to its infrastructures and equipments:

  • Cabinada vessel
  • Tank of experimentation
  • Hyperbaric chamber
  • Realisation of batimetries
  • Multibundle sonar of rank
  • Multi-accent sonar of image
  • System of underwater positioning
  • GPS RTK
  • Design, construction and advice

The equipment

The unit offers the service of a vessel cabinada of 7 metres of length with basis port in Sant Feliu de Guíxols:

Vessel

Vessel with booth Ocqueteau marks model 695 of 7 metres of length, for 6 persons and with intragunwale engine diesel Volvo of 130CV. Equipped with the elements of security of the category IIIs for works in the coast. Also have Probe, GPS and Plòter Garmin 720.

The vessel is equipped with the following elements:

  • Hydraulic crane for weights until 370 Kg.
  • Electrical generator of 230V of 3KVA.
  • Sidebars with flat platen in the extreme and submerged 50cm for the installation of teams.
  • Practicable posterior platform (astern) at level of water.
  • Tubes of fastening for teams on the ceiling and in the prow.
  • Helix of prow to make manoeuvres in difficult places.

Tank of experimentation (swimming pool)

The tank of experimentation is treated of a cemented swimming pool and full of water clorada.

The tank is disturbed in the building CIRS of the Science and Technology Park of the UdG.

The measures of the tank are:

rectangular plant of 16m for 8m, longitudinal section where it marks the different depths where the less deep is 1m and the deepest in the central part of 5m

The tank is equipped with a room submerged with windows to be able to observe the inside.

Crane of 2T that travels longitudinally on the tank in about 2 metres of the verge is also equipped with a bridge.

Hyperbaric chamber

A hyperbaric chamber with fresh water is offered to carry out tests of teams until 140 bar.

The useful internal measures of the chamber are 550mm diameter and 1600mm of altitude

Metallic structure is had to introduce big teams.

The chamber is under a bridge crane for the help in the introduction and extraction of the teams to test.

Realisation of batimetries

The service of realisation of underwater maps or batimetries using an underwater sonar offers itself multibundle and a GPS of accuracy with correction of position.

Multibundle sonar of rank

The unit offers the rent of a sonar multibundle of rank of the manufacturer IMAGENEX type Delta-T.

The sonar issues 120 rays and cover a rank of 120 cross-disciplinary bachelor's degrees and 3 longitudinal bachelor's degrees. Frequency of functioning of 260KHz.

Multibundle sonar of image

Rent of a sonar multibundle of image of the manufacturer Sound Metrics model ARYANS Explorer 3000. Frequency of functioning of 3MHz.

This sonar allows to obtain real-time acoustic images.

System of underwater positioning

Rental of underwater positioning equipment comprised of a surface unit and a submerged unit. The whole, called USBL, belongs to the manufacturer EVO LOGICS and models S2CR 18/34.

With this team the element submerged from the element of surface using an interface web can be located.

GPS RTK

Rent of a GPS RTK of the manufacturer Trimble model SPS461.

Thanks to the cartographic service of Catalonia, this GPS brings us a great accuracy.

Design, construction and advice

The unit offers the design, the construction and the advice of aquatic teams so much since it leans in the team of research in underwater robotics of the UdG.

The acquisition of the following ones equipment has been co-financed for:

  • Experimentation Tank: CICYT and UdG
  • Vessel: UdG and MICICC (you melt down FEDER)
