Multifactor authentication at the University of Girona

Pursuant to the information security policy at the University of Girona and the National Security Scheme, and with a view to preventing the impersonation of people due to the loss or theft of their access credentials.Starting in the 2025/26 academic year, the University of Girona will require multifactor mechanisms during authentication to access web applications. As is the case of other institutions, one of the mechanisms we will use will be single-use codes generated through the Microsoft Authenticator application.

To access any web application, it will not be enough to know your user and password; you will also need a second authentication factor. This second authentication factor can be obtained using an OTP code (One Time Password) generated by the Microsoft Authenticator app or identifying yourself with any of the systems accepted by the VÀLid service of the Open Administration of Catalonia.

It is very important that you have more than one of the various authentication factors at your disposal to ensure that if one of the systems fails, or it is not available to you, you can use another one. These systems are:

To activate two-factor authentication you will need:

  • A mobile phone to receive SMS messages, or one of the authentication systems accepted by VÀLid: recognised digital certificate, mobile IdCAT, Cl@ve, or eIDAS.
  • To install a single-use code application on your mobile phone. Although there are several applications to generate single-use codes, we recommend that you install Microsoft Authenticator. Important: Once installed, there is no need for you to do anything else, do not register.

You can download Microsoft Authenticator on your mobile with these QR codes:

    Android Devices Apple devices

The Microsoft Authenticator app can be installed on any phone, whether private or provided by the UdG. If you have more than one phone, you can configure it to all your phones, so if you don’t have one of your phones on you, or you run out of battery, you can use the other phone.

The user support units will only offer support for MS. Authenticator If you decide to install a different application, you must be capable of solving any problems or difficulties by yourself.

Activation of the service is available at: Managing two-authentication factor , this link is available whenever we ask you for two-factor authentication:

If, when you access the two-factor authentication page, the system detects that you have not entered your mobile phone number, you will be able to insert it by clicking on the link:

This link will take you to the screen to enter your mobile phone number, and you will also have to allow the UdG to send you SMS messages for the sole purpose of verifying your identity.

The mobile number you declare cannot be linked to any other person registered at UdG. You will need to check the phone number by entering a 5-figure code that we will send you by SMS to the mobile number you have entered.

If you have already entered the mobile phone number, identified it with VÀLid or entered your mobile having accessed the dual-factor management app, you can activate it by clicking on the ‘activate’ button:

If you have accessed the app using VÀLid, the QR code will be shown automatically to configure the two-factor authentication for Microsoft Authenticator, otherwise you will first be asked to verify your identity with a 5-figure code that we will send to your MOBILE via SMS message:

Enter the code you receive and press the ‘Validate the code’ button. If after a few minutes you have not received the SMS message, you can ask us to send you a new code by SMS again.

Once the code has been validated, you will obtain the QR code to configure the two-factor authentication in the MS.Authenticator app:

You will find the instructions for configuring two-factor authentication in Microsoft Authenticator with the QR code shown on screen by clicking on the link indicated in the previous screenshot.

Once the two-factor authentication has been activated, you can check the QR code again to configure two-factor authentication or generate a new code again from:

  • The two-factor management app: DFA Management
  • Managing your digital identity at La meva UdG.La meva UdG > Personal > Managing your digital identity

Once you enter the two-factor management app, you can show the current QR code if you need to reconfigure Microsoft Authenticator on your phone or on another device, or creating a new QR code if you suspect that your mobile device has been compromised.

As an alternative to two-factor authentication, it is important that you have at least one of the authentication systems accepted by VÀLid: (More information on each system on the VÀLid website)

  1. idCAT Mòbil
If you want to request idCAT Mòbil: https://idcatmobil.cat /
  2. Digital certificates: idCAT, T-CAT, FNMT-CERES, DNIe, Firmaprofesional, ANCERT, Camerfirma, UANATACA, Abogacía and Izenpe - Basque Country.
If you would like to request idCAT: https://idcat.cat / For other certificates: consult the VÀLID website
  3. Cl@ve: Cl@ve PIN, Cl@ve permanent, Transborder identification eldAS
If you would like to request Cl@ve PIN: https://clave.gob.es

When you access any web application under La meva UdG, such as Moodle, La meva UdG... we will ask you to identify yourself, via a screen like this one:

You can choose whether you want to identify yourself with a username, password and two-factor authentication, or whether you want to identify yourself with VÀLid.

User identification, password and two-factor authentication.

If you choose to identify yourself with a username and password, you will have to enter your username and password and click on the ‘accept’ button

If the user and password are correct, you will be asked to write the single-use code you can consult on the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile phone:

In this example, enter code 149555. By pressing the accept button, you will be identified and allowed to access the app that required your identification.

Identification using VÀLId.

If you choose to identify yourself with VÀLid, you will be redirected to the VÀLid website and there you can choose which of the systems allowed by VÀLid you wish to identify yourself with:

If you identify yourself with VÀLid, you will not have to enter any single-use code.
