The SomAqui project! The identification of gender violence from the perspective of children (WeAreHere! Detecting gender-based violence from children’s perspective), led by Carme Montserrat, is one of the 15 winners of the competitive call of the Social Research Call 2020 of «la Caixa» Foundation. The objective of the research is to create a tool for the early detection in schools of the gender violence that children experience at home, giving the children an active role in detecting the problem and looking for support, with the aim of decreasing this social problem.
The research aims to gather a representative sample of children and teenagers between 9 and 16 years of age in Catalonia, in order to find out how they conceptualise male violence and what aspects of the school context might become key supports for its early identification. Over the two years of the duration of the project, six expert advisory groups on children and teenagers will be involved in the development of tools, the discussion of results and the construction of the identification model, placing their perspective at the centre of the research.
The research has an endowment from La Caixa Foundation of €100,000 and will begin on 1 January 2021, continuing until 31-December 2022. Dr Carme Montserrat is the principal researcher, and the work will be carried out together with the University of Girona’s Liberi research team. The project is supported by the Secretariat for Childhood, Adolescence and Youth, and the Department of Education at the Government of Catalonia
The project has a duration of two years and consists of three phases:
- Training and work with the six groups of experts (Figueres, Girona, Palau d'Anglesola, Tortosa and Vic) who will advise the team throughout the research period.
- Administration of the questionnaire on gender-based violence and ways of providing help to 4,500 pupils in primary and secondary schools in Catalonia.
- Creation of a tool for the early identification of situations of gender-based violence in the home applicable to the educational centres, with the consensus of the 100 heads of the of the primary and secondary schools participating in the research.
