Research on effectively promoting young people’s right to play in residential care

Research

The “Domus ludens - the house that plays” project was run from January 2021 to February 2023, to promote young people’s right to play in residential care. The project used board games, then, with the aim of improving the subjective well-being and personal skills of young people in residential care.

This general aim had 3 specific goals: 1) To provide social educators of residential-care services with skills and training as recreational officers; 2) To implement the right to play in residential-care services through a specific recreational programme based on board games; 3) To assess the impact of recreational officers and the recreational programme on the subjective well-being and skills-acquisition of young people in residential care.

The project had 5 members from 3 European countries taking part in it, with 3 profiles that complemented each other:

  1. Three providers of assistance services for young people under care (Resilis Foundation (Spain), S&S gem. Gesellschaft für Soziales mbH (Germany) Fundacja Samodzielni Robinsonowie (Poland))
  2. Some board game experts (La Juganera Cooperative (Spain))
  3. A research team (Liberi , University of Girona)

The research group Liberi was in charge of evaluating the pilot experience with Carme Montserrat as the lead researcher, Edgar Iglesias, Rosa Sitjes and Coral Gallardo. The project was funded by Erasmus+.

The details of the project and the results are available on this page.
