Master's degree in Teacher Training for Compulsory and Upper Secondary Education, Vocational Training and Language Teaching

Placements

The practicals in schools are a fundamental part of this Master in Teacher Training. The subject “Practicum” (3501MO1684) consists of 14 ECTS credits, which corresponds to 8 weeks in a secondary school, where you will be on-site for 25 hours per week. The Practicum is structured in two periods: two weeks in November and six weeks in March and April. The objectives and tasks to be developed in these two periods are different from each other and are explained in the Practicum Guide, a document provided to the student when they enrol.

During the practicals, besides the on-site stay in a secondary school, the student must draft a teacher portfolio that requires self-directed work and educational tutorials. The student is guided by a tutor from the university and a mentor from the school. Moreover, there is a centre coordinator of practicals in each school.

The practicals are particularly enriching periods for students, the experience going hand in hand with processes of analysis and guided reflection on what a secondary school teacher thinks and observes and how they act. Likewise, the experience must make the student aware of their strong and weak points and, with the help of the mentor and tutor, start off in the teaching profession in a solid way. The “practicum” will never be validated for credit transfer.

The schools where practicals are carried out are the training centres proposed each year by the Department of Education of the Government of Catalonia. The University of Girona has a collaboration agreement with the Department for these professionalising experiences for university students. See the list of awarded works .
