The Institute of Aquatic Ecology (IEA) was set up in 1987 and is dedicated to the study of continental aquatic ecosystems (rivers, reservoirs, marshes, etc.) and marine systems.

At present it consists of three sections (limnology, microbiology and sea biology) with more than 40 expert researchers.
