The Institute of Aquatic Ecology (IEA) was set up in 1987 and is dedicated to the ecological study of inland-water (rivers, reservoirs, marshes, etc.) and marine ecosystems.

At present it consists of three sections (limnology, microbiology and marine biology) with more than 30 expert researchers.
