The Institute of Aquatic Ecology (IEA) is a university research institute created in 1987 and dedicated to the ecological study of inland-water (rivers, reservoirs, marshes, etc.)and marine ecosystems. It currently consists of three sections (limnology, microbiology and marine biology), corresponding four research groups. It brings together more than 30 researchers with expertise in aquatic ecology (including studies on bacteria, algae, macro-invertebrates and fish), which facilitates multidisciplinary research.
A large part of the IEA belongs to EcoAqua (research group recognised and funded by the Government of Catalonia: 2014 SGR 484 and 2017 SGR 548). Members of the Marine Biology Section belong to the MedRecover group (SGR 1521) also funded by the SGR and they coordinate the Health and Fish website.
