Architecture is a multidisciplinary profession which society puts in charge of planning and preserving built-up environments. Houses, streets, squares, cities and regions are the stages where architects play a star role.
The training of future architects has to include two essential aspects of the profession: technical ability and cultural preparation. Planning a building is both a technical act and a cultural event.
It is a vocational and generalist profession, halfway between technological training and the humanities, which allows graduates to work in a wide range of professional fields particularly linked to the field of construction, but also, and increasingly, in other areas of industry, culture or business.
Architects can work individually or in a team, as a self-employed professional; integrated into the world of the company, at all organisational levels (technician, managerial or directorial); as a technician or statutory public servant of the public administration, and, finally, in the field of teaching and research, in secondary education and university institutions as well as in institutes of research and technological innovation.
They also play an important role in the field of the decorative arts: interior decoration, furniture, graphic and industrial design, scenography and advertising.
Their preparation in the field of the research will provide them with the skills for taking part in R&D projects in the technology sector, in areas close to their own discipline (new materials, energy saving, home automation, virtual reality and 3D drawing, architectural renovation and restoration, etc.,) or in other areas, such as the humanities (theory and history of art and architecture, systems of representation, graphic expression, photography, etc.)
To achieve these goals the school follows the current Spanish curriculum for the degree in architecture, which consists of 300 credits (5 years) for the bachelor's degree and 60 credits (1 year) for the master’s.
The University of Girona’s curriculum specifically includes two further educational activities:
- Architecture classes 1 and 2, which consists of intensive one-week-long workshops in the 3rd and 4th years, with a guest architect of recognised prestige.
- 5 one-week-long study trips (one per year) to European cities of architectural interest.
To work professionally as an architect you are required to pass the Master in Architecture is required (60 credits), which is also taught at the PS-UdG.
The Bachelor's degree in Architectural Studies allows access to master's degree studies in the field of technology and architecture.
The University of Girona and the University of Girona Foundation: Innovation and Training propose a wide-ranging master’s programme with a practical profile and focused on the needs of the job market. It also answers the need for advanced level lifelong learning, with specialisation courses and other courses for postgraduates in all fields of knowledge.
If you wish to continue training in the area of research, any of the master’s degrees in the technical areas of study offered by the University of Girona provides access to the doctorate in Technology.
Through the following links you can access the calendars and timetables that correspond to this bachelor's degree.
The academic calendar marks the beginning and end of classes, non-teaching days, holidays, exam periods, and so on. The administrative calendar marks the periods to make the different formalities administrative.
From the third year on of the degree, the school offers professional work placements (placements in a professional work environment), with academic recognition of a maximum of 15 credits (300 hours). These placements can either be in public or private companies or institutions linked to the construction sector, many of which form part of the Association of the Polytechnic School, or in architecture studios in the province of Girona.
The company work placements enable students to gain first-hand knowledge of the construction and urban planning sector, with the aim of completing their training and obtaining practical experience.
The Universia portal (Universia, SA Consortium Portal) offers work placements in companies abroad (within the European Union), which may entitle you to an ERASMUS WORK PLACEMENT grant.
These work placements in company abroad may provide an option for having the same treatment as work placements in Spain, through the Work Placements model, that is, academic monitoring and enrolling on the "Work Placements” course.
With a bachelor's thesis (TFG), students can carry out a project or study, or produce a report or piece of work where they apply, integrate and develop the knowledge, capacities, skills and abilities required in the corresponding education. It carries 6 ECTS credits.
The TFG is aimed at evaluating the skills associated with the degree and concludes with the public defence, and evaluation and grading of the work.
As established in the UdG regulations, owing to the nature of the subject, a bachelor's thesis is not eligible for a distinction or a compensated pass.
