Introduction to the notion of Cultural Heritage from an interdisciplinary and integrationist perspective.Cultural Heritage is presented, within an extensive definition framework of culture, establishing the relationship with memory, identity and the geographical framework behind it.The concept's development is approached to facilitate the identification of its main uses and functions.Students will become familiar with its framework of application in the 21st century, with a humanistic and critical approach, and issues dealt with ranging from conservation to restoration, not to mention management and social function.It will also prepare students, in their professional placements, in providing them with a series of tools and ideas, such as being faced with a living subject involved in the role of current societies; in the renewal of theory debates on Heritage; and in responsibility in its practical application.

Artistic manifestations of Hellenic art from the ancient period are studied.The characteristics, functions and basic lines of the works created then, the various formal languages that developed then and the essential traits that shaped each of their styles and works, as well as the techniques used are analysed.Hellenic art should be understood as a cultural and artistic space where a good part of the elements of western culture and art were conceived on the basis of the intense framework of relations that arose between the peoples and cultures inhabiting the Mediterranean in Antiquity.The aim is for students to acquire rational and critical theoretical knowledge, relating to the artistic production of Hellenic art through its various artistic languages.Training activities are intended to enable them to acquire the competencies that can apply to professional practice relating to the history of art of this period, as well as a capacity for analysing it critically.

Study of artistic expressions in Western Europe from the emergence of Christianity in the 4th century to the dawn of the Romanesque, as well as art in Byzantium from the 5th to 15th centuries, in addition to Islamic art from its genesis in 622 - one of the most significant phenomena for the development of mediaeval culture and art - until the fall of the Kingdom of Granada. From the perspective of European art, we will analyse the emergence of Christian iconography from the 4th century, whose validity - with obvious modifications - reaches Modernity. We will examine new material supports for visual exhibitions: mosaics and paintings from basilicas and mausoleums, reliefs from sarcophagi and ecclesiastical interiors, techniques in the sumptuous decorative arts and innovative illuminated manuscripts. All these artistic expressions will be studied considering the intellectual prominence of men and women. We will analyse artistic enrichment resulting from diplomatic exchanges, but also from armed conflicts. Analysis of artistic production from 1000 to 1500, starting with the period of cultural, institutional and commercial revival in Latin Europe, which gave rise to the first shared and international art in Europe: the Romanesque, a true consummation of transnational artistic exchange. The course is part of an understanding of the Gregorian Reform led by the papacy, the expansion of the monastic order of Cluny, the organisation of pilgrimage routes through Europe, the mass development of vaulted buildings and the integration of all the arts within the Church. We will analyse the controversial artistic creation of the Cistercians and the new monastic orders of the late Middle Ages, within the framework of the study of Gothic art, the culmination of European monumental excellence and of iconic art forms such as stained-glass windows and grand entrances as seen in the buildings that are the defining features of many European cities: Gothic cathedrals. This comprehensive study of art from this period equips students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills, from interpretation to reasoned justification, that can be transferred to their future professional careers. Presentation of the history and development of museums, from theoretic and practical perspectives affecting museology and its specific museographic expression, putting special emphasis on the challenges facing museums in the 21st century.The main aspects relating to management and conservation of collections, communication and dissemination models, legislation and museum-applied architecture will be dealt with.Inviting students to enter a very rich field that provides them with sound theoretical knowledge, while enabling them to apply that knowledge to the practice of managing and conserving historical-artistic heritage.Students will acquire tools and skills for their future job placements as they gain skills from the other subjects in the History of Art bachelor’s degree.
