The main objective is to provide the student with knowledge of the conceptual bases of the discipline.Certain basic concepts and a perspective of epistemological development of Human Geography are accordingly introduced.Keys aspects of the contents will be: the evolution of Geography (from Geographical Societies to the current profession of geographer); demographic growth and world urbanisation; the population and migrations; economic activity and spatial organisation; power and territory.

Introduction to the notion of Cultural Heritage from an interdisciplinary and integrationist perspective.Cultural Heritage is presented, within an extensive definition framework of culture, establishing the relationship with memory, identity and the geographical framework behind it.The concept's development is approached to facilitate the identification of its main uses and functions.Students will become familiar with its framework of application in the 21st century, with a humanistic and critical approach, and issues dealt with ranging from conservation to restoration, not to mention management and social function.It will also prepare students, in their professional placements, in providing them with a series of tools and ideas, such as being faced with a living subject involved in the role of current societies; in the renewal of theory debates on Heritage; and in responsibility in its practical application.

Paisatges naturals i culturals a la MediterràniaPaisajes naturales y culturales en el MediterráneoNatural and Cultural Landscapes in the Mediterranean Region  (3102G00061)

Subject that delves deeply into the knowledge and understanding of the huge diversity of natural and cultural landscapes surrounding the Mediterranean.This approach sees the Mediterranean area as a region with its own features from climate, bio-geographic and cultural points of view, among other things.Emphasis will be put on the special features of the natural, agricultural and urban landscapes of its northern and southern shores, largely due to a millennial anthropic action.

Tècniques quantitatives i qualitatives en Ciències Socials Técnicas cuantitativas y cualitativas en Ciencias Sociales Quantitative and qualitative techniques in Social Sciences  (3102G00062)

Studying and experimenting with several methods and techniques to analyse the social phenomena that occur at a specific time and space.Quantitative techniques are worked to measure and numerically analyse the data extracted from primary (questionnaires, surveys, cartographic analyses) or secondary (statistics) sources.On the other hand, qualitative methods are shown to provide a better understanding of the social, cultural and territorial contexts through interviews, observations and analysis of cases, documentary sources, discussion groups, etc.

Reptes Ambientals Retos Ambientales Environmental challenges   (3102G00064)

The subject will focus on analysing and understanding the historical development of the main impact of the great environmental problems on a planetary scale, not to mention regional scale too, and, finally, its repercussions at local level in the context of global environmental change.The following derived key themes are approached on this multi-scalar basis: the awakening of environmental and sustainability consciousness, Anthropocene, the climate crisis, the food crisis, the migratory crisis.Special emphasis, when dealing with all these derivatives, is put on their manifestations, consequences and future scenarios in the context of the Mediterranean basin.

Study of the methods and processes necessary for the preparation and use of maps, from several approaches: historical, critical, technical, analytical, communicative.This instrumental subject prepares students to design and use maps as an interpretative geographical, territorial and environmental tool.Methods of work are addressed in terms of hard-copy maps as well as a variety of digital tools that harness the increasing volume of available geographical information.

The subject introduces the theories, concepts and fundamental methods of Physical Geography, from the presentation of the main systems that make up the key principles of the subject: the weather and climate systems, the systems and the cycles of the Earth’s crust and of modelling the relief and Biosphere systems and cycles.

Helps students to understand the geographical reality of the European continent, with a particular focus on the countries of the European Union, and taking into account the geopolitical changes and productive and territorial transformations that have affected it in the final decades of the 20th century and early decades of the 21st century. Contents: The concept of "Europe," geographical diversity and territorial imbalances; the physical environment; the European population; the Europe of cities; rural spaces; geoeconomic changes; political Europe: the construction of the European political space, the European Union, and geopolitical conflicts.
