Dades generals

Curs acadèmic:
2014
Descripció:
Description: This course introduces a framework and a set of tools for formulating successful strategies, where success for firms is considered in terms of creating shareholder value. The strategy of a firm is the set of decisions it makes concerning how it will achieve superior performance, and hence create value for shareholders. The objective is to identify and analyze the sources of profitability available to the firm and develop strategies to access these sources of profitability. Strategy is, thus, a link between the firm and its business environment. This implies that there are two primary areas of analysis: the external industry environment of the firm - its industry- and the internal environment of the firm - in particular, the resources and capabilities that the firm possesses. A central theme in the course is the analysis of competitive advantage. Superior performance is primarily the result of building sustainable competitive advantage, which is achieved through deploying internal resources and capabilities to exploit the key success factors within the firm’s industry environment. We will analyze the potential for competitive advantage and design strategies that can build comparative advantage. Thus, the essence of the overall framework is to address the development and management of internal resources and capabilities in relation to the external environment, to achieve competitive advantage. General Outcomes: - To improve analytical thinking, strategic thinking and economic reasoning. - To improve oral and written communication. - To improve research capabilities. Specific Outcomes: - To understand the principal concepts, frameworks and techniques of strategic management. - To use this theory and tools to understand the reasons for good or bad performance by a firm. - To use this theory and tools to generate strategy options, assess these options and select the most appropiate strategy. - To develop the capacity to view business problems from a general management perspective, and the ability to develop original and innovatory approaches to strategic problems.
