This double degree is offered on the basis that both degrees share a significant proportion of credits. Furthermore, a convergence of these technical studies is visible in the context of the many careers to which the degrees can lead. This is the consequence of the changes in electricity distribution companies. The expansion of smart grids demonstrates the technological transformation of the sector and has caused both streams of engineering to develop more than ever to the benefit of the professionals involved.

Beyond the smart grids, there are other fields causing this change, such as micro-generation, renewable energy, the roll-out of electrical cars and energy resource management, energetic resources, not to mention technological challenges.

To obtain the double degree, the student must successfully pass five academic years with an average of 60 ECTS credits per year. In the final year, a bachelor's thesis has to be prepared in which the knowledge from the two courses should be demonstrated, or the student can carry out a thesis for each degree.

The ECTS credits are divided as follows:

  • 147 ECTS credits from compulsory subjects common to the two courses
  • 15 ECTS credits from Electronic Engineering (EE) compulsory subjects that are optional to Automatic and Industrial Electronic Engineering (AIEE)
  • 4 ECTS credits from AIEE compulsory subjects that are optional to EE
  • 10 ECTS credits from subjects that are optional to both degrees
  • 33 ECTS credits from other EE compulsory subjects
  • 39 ECTS credits from other AIEE compulsory subjects

When you finish the double degree in Automation and Industrial Electronics Engineering / Electrical Engineering you can study the Master's in Industrial Engineering at the University of Girona. This is the only official master's degree that qualifies you to work in the regulated profession of industrial engineering.

Bachelor's thesis

During the final year, you will have to write a bachelor's thesis on both Electrical Engineering and Automation and Industrial Electronics Engineering, in which you must demonstrate the expertise acquired through the two courses. The bachelor's thesis is an engineering project on a topic of the student’s choice. It is carried out under the supervision of a lecturer. If so desired, it can be conducted in a company or a research group.
