[1] Catalan, Spanish and English are the 3 priority languages in the translation of the website and in which translation is contemplated for some or all official communications

1.Catalan language

Article 4.1 of the UdG's Statutes state that “Catalan is the preferred institutional language of the University of Girona and, therefore, the language of normal use in its activities”.

Article 6 of Act 1/2003, of 19 February, on Catalan universities, and articles 20 and 22 of Act 1/1998, of 7 January, of linguistic policy, establish that Catalan is the preferred institutional language of Catalan universities and, consequently, regulate its condition as the language normally used in their activities.

Article 9 of Act 1/1998, of 7 January, on linguistic policy, establishes that Catalan administrations “have to use Catalan in their internal processes and among them.They also have to use it normally in communications and notifications addressed to resident physical or legal persons in the Catalan language area, without compromising the right of citizens to receive them in Spanish if they request it.”

Likewise, article 10.1 of the same act establishes that “in the administrative procedures of the Administration of the Generalitat, for local administrations and other corporations of Catalonia, Catalan has to be used, without compromising the right of citizens to present documents, express information and, if they request so, to receive notifications in Spanish”.

The Regulations on the UdG’s use of languages establish the following rules regarding the Catalan language in the sphere of PTGAS:

• Article 5.1.The name of the Universitat de Girona will always be in Catalan.The institutional denominations of its units and bodies will be in Catalan, except itself they are inserted in the text of a document written in another language.In this case, mechanisms will be established to validate the translation.
• Article 5.2.Documentation addressed to the other universities and public administrations in the Catalan linguistic domain must be in Catalan.
• Article 5.3.The communications and the announcements that the UdG addresses to the media in order to be disseminated in the Catalan linguistic domain must be in the Catalan language.
• Article 5.4.Communications that the University addresses to the general public in the Catalan linguistic domain must be in the Catalan language.Communication addressed to
• residents in the Catalan linguistic domain must be in the Catalan language, without compromising the right of citizens to request a translation in Spanish.
• Article 5.5.The UdG must translate into Spanish the documents, reports or parts from these that have an effect outside the autonomous territory, and documents directed at interested parties who expressly request this.
• Article 5.8.When attending to people verbally, the administrative and service staff of the UdG must address members of the public in Catalan, unless they are requested to attend to them in another language which the staff have a sufficient command of.
• Article.4.1.Internal and external signage at the UdG and all centres it is responsible for must at least be in Catalan.
• Article 4.2.All performances and internal communications of an administrative nature must at least be in Catalan.

2.Third languages

Article 4 bis of the Statutes of the UdG establishes that the “the University, through the corresponding plan on linguistic policy and the plans on pluriliguism that it approves, must foster the knowledge and use of third languages”.

3.Language training

Article 8.3 of the Regulations on the use of languages in the UdG establishes that the training plan for technical, administration and services staff must provide for a language training plan with the goal of this collective gaining a sufficient command of the official languages and the third language that this document refers to.

In this sense, the Institute of Education Sciences – Learning and Teaching Innovation Service offers courses every year for languages in the training plan.Examples of the courses offered in the last few years include:

4.The UdG’s linguistic criteria

When writing institutional documents in Catalan and English, the indications included in the UdG linguistic and style guide are obligatory.It is highly advisable to check the resources on the linguistic resource portal UdGBabel.
