The Catalan Climate Change Office promotes and supports the action of making voluntary agreements with Catalan organisations, entities and collectives for reducing its greenhouse gas emissions. The objective of promoting these agreements is to make them a key instrument within the set of public policies related to climate change. Following the experiences of other European countries, it has been ascertained that these agreements between the public and private sectors are a very useful tool to advance towards sustainability.
To this effect, actions are set out in the Framework Plan to Mitigate Climate Change in Catalonia 2008–2012 to promote voluntary agreements focused on mitigation and to create a register of affiliated organisations. The Voluntary Agreements Program between the Government of Catalonia and the Catalan organisations continuous to be promoted and includes the Energy and Climate Change in Catalonia Plan 2012-2020.
Through the Voluntary Agreements Programme, the University of Girona, which is committed to the objectives of reducing emissions, voluntarily publishes its emissions and sets out measures that contribute to their reduction that go beyond what is obligatory according to the regulations. For its part, the Government of Catalonia supports these efforts and, at the same time, establishes mechanisms for their public recognition. As stipulated in the signed agreement, the scope of this affiliation includes all the university’s campuses that accommodate teaching centres and services with headquarters in the City of Girona (Barri Vell Campus, Centre Campus and Montilivi Campus).
