En ucraïnès les persones tenen un nom, un patronímic i un cognom. El cognom és el nom de família, el patronímic és una forma derivada del nom del pare que indica “fill o filla de” i el nom és el nom de pila triat pels pares. Vegem-ne un exemple:
Vasýl’ Myxájlovýč Hončarénko
Vasýl’ és el nom de pila de l’individu (masculí), Myxájlovýč és el patronímic de Myxájl i Hončarénko és el cognom o nom de família. Els sufixos que es fan servir per formar els patronímics són –ivna / -ijvna per a les dones i –yč / -ovyč per als homes:
Andr’ijovyč (Andr’ij + ovyč) : fill d’Andrei
Petr’ívna (Petró + ivna) : filla de Petro
