Elementary Analysis

AE

L’Elementary Analysis (AE) it is a technique that it provides the total contents of Carbon (C), Hydrogen (H) and Nitrogen (N), expressed as  a percentage in weight. Can be quantified in an extensive range of different nature samples, including organic substances and inorganic, so many in solid, liquid or viscous phase.

He uses itself for helping unknown, the composition of a sample, to determine the structure of a compound like this so as to confirm the structure and the purity of a synthetic compound. He applies to research as well as to quality assurance.

Job request

In order to request the analysis of a sample for AE, you have to get yourselves with the staff responsible for the team in touch.

In case it is wanted by AE to analyse, the applicant has to inform about the toxicity and dangerousness of the sample and precautions of storage.

Conditions of delivery of the sample

The samples have to give themselves in recipients adapted to preserve some the integrity, indicating if any special condition of conservation is necessary before the analysis.

The necessary amount of sample is very small (1 mg can manage to be sufficient), very important factor when there is little amount of material. The recommended minimum amount fluctuates between 5-10 milligrams and can increase if it is necessary to make some treatment previous.

To guarantee the representativeness and repeatability of the results, it is important that the sample is homogeneous. If necessary, the Services have mortar of agate and mill of balls to be able to molturar the samples and of a team of lyophilisation in the case of humid samples. If any other technique of preparation is required it be necessary to talk to the staff responsible for the team.

Once the results of analysis given, the surplus of sample keeps in the facilities of the STR, stored in the conditions agreed on, a maximum period in 3 months, passed that is destroyed in a suitable way.

The equipment

Perkin Elmer EA2400 serie II

Year:
2009

Descriptor:
  • Rank of weighing: 1-5mg
  • Temperature of combustion: 925-930°C
  • Gas of dragging: Have
Limits of detection:
  • Carbon: 0.72%
  • Hydrogen: 0.20%
  • Nitrogen: 1.20%

How does it work?

The technique is based on the instantaneous and complete oxidation (combustion) of the sample, with pure oxygen at high temperature. The different simple gases product of the combustion, CO2, H2Or and N2, they are driven through helium, as a carrying gas, through an oven of reduction and afterwards are sorted out by physical means on going through a column of separation. Finally, the gases arrive in a separate way to a detector, in what gives a proportional signal to the concentration of each component, obtaining like this a percentage result from each of the analysed elements.

Essay of aptitude about organic elementary analysis (AEO) and isotopic analysis

The participation in this essay is a form of measuring the quality of the results through an external evaluation.

They usually take part in it around 35 national and international laboratories. It consists of the analysis of three types of samples: a pure organic substance and two matrices more of different general interest, giving results of the contents of CHN.

The Services take part in it in a way continued since 1997, always obtaining satisfactory results.

Applications / Practical cases

The types of samples can be very much varied, because of that the fields of application of this technique are several and encompass so much the analysis for research as for quality assurance.

  • Valuation of waste destined to the generation of fertilisers and compostings in relation Carboni/Nitrogen as derivatives of sylviculture, sawdusts of wood...
  • Cosmetic study and characterisation of fossil, ceramic organic and inorganic samples like for example fuels, biological samples, foods...
  • Organic and organometàl·lica characterisation of synthesis products, synthesis of drugs...
