Widespread School: Innovating Teaching Approaches Outside the Classroom

Funded by the Erasmus+ -KA220 programme Action-, the project has the goal of backing the four territories (Italy, Spain, Finland and Croatia) in adopting innovative experiences in schools, through the involvement of political chiefs.This three-year project started in September 2023 and is aimed at: primary and secondary school teaching staff, school managerial teams, educators and those in charge of education policies, and finally it looks to benefit students.During the project, students are involved in experiencing the education proposals developed.   

The partners involved will work together to attain the objectives specific to the project: 

  1. The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and the University of Girona will lead the methodological research.
  2. The Reggio Children Foundation and Saunalahti Primary School (Espoo, Finland) will lead the path of co-planning for the development of educational proposals in a dimension of curricular activities outside of the school environment and the strengthening of teaching staff skills.
  3. The city of Zadar in Croatia and the Town Council of Reggio Emilia, with support from the E35 Foundation, will focus on raising awareness about innovative teaching methods. 
  4. The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and the Carme Auguet Primary School in Girona will evaluate the project.  

The project consists of the following activities:

  1. Project management activities;

  1. Research activities and methodological analysis about initiatives, practices and teaching approaches of the approach to the Education Outside the Classroom in the European and international sphere; 

  1. Professional development activities for primary-school teachers and educators about the approach of Education Outside the Classroom; activation of co-design processes with community professionals from different environments of learning.  

  1. Involvement of political leaders in activities to raise awareness about the importance of innovation in school systems through the approach of Education Outside of the Classroom, favouring the redefinition of community spaces as high-quality learning environments; 

  1. Communication, dissemination and impact assessment activities. 

This project aims to achieve the following results:

  1. Analysis report about the approach of Education Outside the Classroom, to contain practical European and international good practice, as well as a research bibliography of teaching approaches available on this subject.   

  1. Creation of a toolbox (guidelines and materials) to support teaching staff and educational teams in the definition of cross-disciplinary school programmes based on Education Outside the Classroom.  

  1. Organisation of international training on the toolbox, aimed at 25 primary and secondary school teachers/educators in the 4 partner countries: Italy, Spain, Croatia and Finland.   

  1. Organisation of local workshops to discuss with educators, political leaders, teachers and school management teams the factors and limits (regulatory, legal, political) with respect to the implementation of Education Outside the Classroom approaches in their relevant contexts.   

  1. Development of political recommendations about the added value of the teaching approaches of  Education Outside the Classroom.   

  1. Organisation of national dissemination seminars and a final event in Brussels.  

  1. Development of a website in different languages to make the toolbox accessible, along with the other results of the project, to interested parties in the European and international school sphere.
