On October 23rd, Dr. Miquel Llorente, co-Principal Investigator of the Comparative Minds Research Group at the Universitat de Girona (UdG) and Serra Húnter Professor in the Department of Psychology, gave an engaging lecture to students of the "Evolutionary Psychology and Primatology" module at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. The session, titled "Animal Personality: Applications in Conservation and Welfare," introduced students to the latest research on the personality traits of non-human animals, focusing on how these individual behavioral differences impact their adaptability and well-being.Dr. Llorente discussed the importance of studying personality traits in animals, referencing influential research methods, which are instrumental in understanding how specific personality traits can influence behaviour. He presented findings from various species, including primates, that demonstrate how personality assessments can contribute to enhancing the welfare of animals in captivity by tailoring care to their individual needs. Additionally, he explored how understanding animal personalities supports conservation practices by allowing for more effective adaptation strategies when reintroducing animals into the wild. The lecture provided valuable insights into how studying animal personality is essential not only for academic understanding but also for practical applications in welfare and conservation. Students left the session with a deeper appreciation for the role of individual differences in animal behaviour and their relevance to the field of psychology.
