The doctors Begaiym Kulbaeva and Aliya Kadyrova are specialists in Radiology and Radiotherapy at the I.K. Akhunbaev Kyrgyz State Medical Academy.

The I.K. Akhunbaev Kyrgyz State Medical Academy (KSMA) is a higher medical facility in Kyrgyzstan with more than 75 years of history. It is considered as one of the main medical universities in Central Asia and it has a first-class reputation in educating highly qualified doctors.

The main objective of training specialists is the implementation of health care practice through education, which is focused on the rendering of quality services on the part of the general medicine professionals and their promotion in the regions. The most important requirement of the doctors’ training is mainly the walk in clinic, enabling them to understand the basic principles of general practice, such as versatility, continuous monitoring and preventive activities.

Among the teaching staff at the Academy there are more than 600 highly qualified members of teaching staff, including 7 members of the National Academy of Sciences of Kyrgyzstan (NAS KR), 4 corresponding members of NAS KR, 55 Doctors of Sciences and 215 PhD students (Sciences candidates) at KSMA. At present, there are more than 6,000 students at Kyrgyzstan from 19 foreign countries. Teaching is imparted in Kyrghyz, Russian and English.

Lecture “Why is it so hard to get rid of malaria? Deciphering the secrets of a parasite"

Alfred Cortés is an ICREA Research Professor at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal). Before settling in Barcelona, he worked in Australia, Papua New Guinea and the United Kingdom. He has dedicated the last twenty years to investigating the parasites that produce malaria, under the strong conviction that better knowledge of the biology of these parasites will help to better fight the illness. His current research focuses particularly on the epigenetic regulation of the gene expression to Plasmodium falciparum. These epigenetic mechanisms regulate processes as important as the evasion of immunological answers, transmission from humans to mosquitoes, and resistance to drugs.

Raúl Pelayo is a Neurology specialist, and Joan Vidal specialises in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. They are experts in treating neuropathic pain and spinal injuries, and they work on developing new therapies such as transplanting stem cells in patients recovering from spinal injury, and non-invasive cerebral stimulation in neuro-rehabilitation.

The talk included an extensive review of the current state of Medical Humanities on the international scene, as well as key references about this subject.
