The objective of the optional module on Advanced Social Research Methodology [MARS] is the theoretical and applied knowledge of the methodology and the diversity of advanced methods and techniques in the analysis of data for social research, dealing with various methodological perspectives, both quantitative and qualitative. This general objective is supplemented by three specific objectives: 1. To guide the process of carrying out research work by establishing the criteria and tasks needed for their methodological design and the pertinent application of research methods and techniques to adapt them to theoretical models and achieve the rigour of scientific research.2. To acquire the skills of using the software corresponding to the data analysis techniques processed.3. To provide information and learning about applied research methods and techniques, with special reference to the lines of research of the module teaching staff and the research teams of the Department.

The aim of this subject is for students to learn to analyse both quantitative and qualitative data obtained in Research and Investigation in communication. For this reason, students will be trained in the use of the main computer programmes for research: SPSS, for the analysis of quantitative data, and NVivo, for the analysis of qualitative data. Based on this subject, students will learn to apply the appropriate techniques depending on the type of research carried out with the aim of extracting results and conclusions from the data analysed. The first part of the subject will focus on the analysis of quantitative data: the use of the SPSS programme will be explained, as well as the application and interpretation of the different statistical techniques. The second part of the subject will focus on qualitative data analysis through NVivo software. Students will therefore learn different techniques for processing and coding data (interviews, field notes, textual productions) collected in a variety of multimedia media (text, image, audio, video and html).
