Exercises related to the topics of the course to be solved in class Students, working in small groups, will be asked to solve 4 problem sets in class. Cooperative learning methodologies will be used. These problem sets will be related to the topics of the course. In particular, one of the problem sets will be focused on the protection and deprotection of functional groups. In the other problem sets, students will be asked to suggest a retrosynthesis and a synthesis for a given target molecule.
The items that will be assessed are: the synthetic strategy suggested, the correction of the reaction conditions and the correction of the structure of all compounds.
Each group member will have the same score.

Exercises related to the topics of the course to be solved at home Students, working in small groups, will be asked to solve 2 problem sets at home. Cooperative learning methodologies will be used. These problem sets will be related to the topics of the course. In particular, in these problem sets students will be asked to suggest a retrosynthesis and a synthesis for a given target molecule.
The items that will be assessed are: the synthetic strategy suggested, the correction of the reaction conditions and the correction of the structure of all compounds.
Each group member will have the same score.

Preparation and oral presentation of a poster related to the topics of the course Students, working in small groups, will be asked to prepare and present a poster focused on the analysis of the synthetic strategy described for a commercial drug. In particular, students will be asked to choose a commercial drug, search the synthetic strategy described for this drug, plan a retrosynthetic analysis and write the synthetic strategy. Alternatively, students will be offered to participate in an interdisciplinary project and, prepare and present a poster focused on this project. The detailed description and the key deadlines of all the tasks involved in both options will be uploaded in the Moodle at the beginning of the course.
At the end of the activity students will discuss the poster with the rest of the class and with the professor. The professor will choose randomly the member of the group that will present the poster. This activity will be assessed globally and each group member will have the same score. The assessment will be performed based on an assessment rubric that will be uploaded in the Moodle at the beginning of the course. The final mark of this activity will be the average between the grades given by the other groups and the grade of the professor.
10 No

Qualificació

Grading of the students that decide to follow a continous assessment:
Exercises to be solved in class: 20%
Exercises to be solved at home: 10%
Preparation and oral presentation of a poster: 10%
Exam: 60%

The exam is the only activity that can be retaken. Students that want to improve their marks must submit a request to the professor in advance. Performing again the exam means that they renounce to the mark previously obtained.

Students must get 5 points in order to pass the subject. However, they must get a minimum mark of 4 out of 10 in the exam in order that the marks obtained in the activities that can not be retaken are considered.

(Art. 21.1(UdG). The fraudulent completion of any of the exercises required in the evaluation of a subject will lead to the failure to pass the subject, regardless of the disciplinary process that may be followed against the offending student.)

Criteris específics de la nota «No Presentat»:
The subject is going to be considered as "Not Presented" only if the student has not carried out any grading activity.

Avaluació única:
According to the UdG regulations, students who decide to take the single assessment must request it within the established deadlines. Upon acceptance, they waive the continuous assessment.

Grading of the students that request the single assessment:
Exam 100%

The exam and the resit exam, if necessary, will be the same as the ones for the continuous assessment students and will be held on the same date.

This exam will assess the achievement of the topics in the course. Students will be ask to suggest a retrosynthesis and a synthetic strategy for different target molecules. The items that will be assessed are: the synthetic strategy suggested, the correction of the reaction conditions and the correction of the structure of all compounds.

Students must get 5 points in the exam in order to pass the subject. This exam can be retaken. Students with a grade above 5 can improve their marks but they must submit a request to the professor in advance. Performing again the exam means that they renounce to the mark previously obtained.

(Art. 21.1(UdG). The fraudulent completion of any of the exercises required in the evaluation of a subject will lead to the failure to pass the subject, regardless of the disciplinary process that may be followed against the offending student.)

Requisits mínims per aprovar:
Continuous assessment:
Students must get 5 points in order to pass the subject. However, they must get a minimum mark of 4 out of 10 in the exam in order that the marks obtained in the activities that can not be retaken are considered.

Single assessment:
Students must get 5 points in the exam in order to pass the subject.

Tutoria

During the course, students will be encouraged to ask for tutorials with the professor to clarify aspects related to the contents of the subject. These tutorials will be performed in-person or online depending on the way is more convenient for the student.

Comunicacio i interacció amb l'estudiantat

The communication and interaction with students will be via Moodle, email or the videoconferencing platform designated by the UdG .

Observacions

At the beginning of the course, students should form groups of 3 to 4 people. Students must notify the teacher the members of each group at the beginning of the classes. Groups are going to carry out the activities that can not be retaken using cooperative learning methodologies. Final exam is to be done individually.

General features for each activity are indicated. Specific criteria for grading and functioning will be uploaded in the Moodle at the beginning of the course.

General comment:
Chapters related to the manipulation of functional groups and to the strategies for the formation of carbon-carbon bonds have been studied in previous organic subjects (Química dels compostos orgànics, Mètodes sintètics orgànics). Students will be encouraged to review the concepts studied in these subjects. Thus, they are essentially refresher chapters, but relevant aspects not studied in previous courses will be added.

Assignatures recomanades

  • Mètodes sintètics orgànics
  • Química dels compostos orgànics
