I obtained my PhD in the Institute of Computational Chemistry in 1999 with a study on the theoretical evaluation of Nonlinear Optical properties, which was awarded an UdG PhD extraordinary award. I have carried out 12 research stays that sum a total of 24 months. In 1999 I obtained a Assistant Professor position in the Chemistry Department of the University of Girona (UdG) and in 2005 I became Associate Professor. I have published 94 scientific papers that have received 2264 citations (88% Q1, 65% first author and/or corresponding author). My h-index is 29. Since 2011 I has published 31 papers which have been cited 407 times.
I have supervised three theses (Miquel Torrent, 2000-2004; Mireia Guell, 2005-2009; Marc Garcia, 2011-2015) and I am supervising two (Ferran Acuña, 2012, Veronica Postils, 2013). In the thesis of M. Torrent we studied the role of the higher-order contributions to Vibrational Nonlinear Optical Properties (VNLOP) and the validity of the principles of maximum hardness and minimum polarizability (14 papers). M. Güell thesis was focused on the theoretical study of the catalytic activity in hydrocarbon oxidation processes of various enzymes and complexes of Fe and Cu (13 papers). In the thesis of M. Garcia we studied the stability and reactivity of endohedral fullerenes and their relation with the aromaticity (18 papers) The three PhD theses obtained the maximum possible grade and the UdG PhD extraordinary award. The thesis project of F. Acuña deals with the theoretical study of the mechanism of water oxidation by non-heme iron catalysts (5 papers 2013-2014), while Verònica Postils thesis is focused on the study of the reactivity of high oxidation state Fe=O and Mn=O complexes. In addition, I have also continued my work in the field of VNLOP, developing new approaches that dramatically reduce computation time of their evaluation. Finally, several international collaborations have allowed me to study a variety of subjects such as the role of vibrational movements in the two-photon absorption (TPA); or characterization of new self-assembled nanocapsules based metalloporphyrins. Some of my research projects have been carried out with a synergistic collaboration with experimental chemist. One of my new scientific interests will focus on developing new functional DFT to calculate nonlinear optical properties.
From 2011 to 2015 I have participated as UdG group leader in a FP7-REGPOT project of the "Capacities" programme called "Advancement of research capability for the development of new functional compounds" coordinated by the National Hellenic Research Foundation, and the MINECO project with ref. CTQ2014-52525-P and with title “DFT functionals for the calculation of nonlinear optical properties”.
In the last five years I have presented 6 invited lectures at international conferences (e.g. CANBIC 2015, ESCMQC 2014, ICCH 2012) and have established a fruitful international collaboration with prestigious theoretical chemists (e.g. Dr. Heribert Reis, Greece; Dr. Robert Zalesny, Poland, Prof. David Lauvergnat, France; Prof. Bernard Kirtman, USA). Dr. Luis is regular reviewer for journals like J. Am. Chem. Soc., Chem. Eur. J., J. Chem. Theory Comput., Inorg. Chem.
