Chair of Sport and Physical Education - Centre for Olympic Studies at the University of Girona

Presentation

Banyoles is a city that has made sport one of its hallmarks, combining sporting activity with its unrivalled geographical environment and landscape. Created jointly by the University of Girona and Banyoles City Council, the Chair of Sport and Physical Education - Centre for Olympic Studies is performing important activities in the field of continued education and spreading knowledge of different sporting areas. The city of Banyoles has also received recognition in the form of the seal of Sport Tourism and during 2015 was recognised as a “European Town of Sport”.

Since year 2014, the Chair is also Centre of Olympic Studies - University of Girona endorsed by the Spanish Olympic Committee and recognised by the Centre of Olympic Studies of the International Olympic Committee (COI), as a Centre of Studies and of academic Olympic Research, actively involved Olympic studies and as a member of the worldwide OSRC network.

For the University of Girona and the city of Banyoles, the impact of the Centre for Olympic Studies has involved forming part of the CEO network and linking the region to the Olympic movement in the broadest possible sense, i.e., representing the possibility of organising research, dissemination and education projects about the Olympic phenomenon linked to the territory with the support and recognition of the Spanish Olympic Committee, which is currently the organisation responsible for this function. With this in mind, a bibliography about the Olympic movement has been prepared by the Spanish Olympic Committee.

At a Catalan level, it is the third Centre of Olympic Studies in the autonomous region, sharing the privilege of working on the dissemination and research of the Olympic movement together with the Centre for Olympic Studies at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, created in 1989 as a pioneering centre in the research and dissemination of the Olympic values and sport as part of and the Centre for Olympic Studies Joan Antoni Samaranch of the Olympic Barcelona Foundation, founded in 1993.
