From the influenza outbreak of 1918 to Covid-19: a historical analysis in Europe and Latin America

Objectives

Main aims

  1. To study the links between cultural representations of influenza and the discourses and policies developed, both from the States and from political cultures during the two years of influenza (1918-1920).
  2. Analyse the links between the crisis of democracy and liberalism developed during the twenties, in relation to the study of point 1.
  3. Carry out a comparative study between the crisis of democracy and liberalism in the 1920s (point 2) and responses to the current pandemic, within the framework of illiberal regimes and populist and post-fascist governments and movements of the last decade.

  1. A collective book in Spanish and English
  2. Academic articles in high impact journals
  3. Organisation of an international congress with specialists of international renown
  4. Papers at international conferences and meetings
  5. A virtual exposure to influenza as a “global moment,” both on an epidemiological, political, and cultural scale.
