Ecological criteria and social perception in the restoration of La Pletera An urban development project was started in the La Pletera salt marshes in the 1980s but was halted and abandoned because of the economic crisis of the 1990s. As part of this restoration project, the man-made structures, the breakwater, the promenade, the access streets and all the filling material where the houses were to be built were removed. This article offers 1) a brief description of the historical process that took what was supposed to be a set of tourist homes to what it is now a functional, protected salt marsh included in the Montgrí, les Illes Medes i el Baix Ter Natural Park, 2) a description of the restoration process that was carried out and the ecological criteria that were used for the restoration, 3) some initial data about the response of the ecosystem during the first years immediately after the restoration, and 4) some data on visitors’ perception of the conversion of this natural system.
