Economia GlobalEconomía GlobalGlobal Economy  (3108G04001)

The current economy is a complex, globally interconnected system based on interdependent financial systems, commercial networks and market dynamics that together shape the economic situation at any given time. We will explore the interaction between countries, companies and individuals in the formation of economic systems, from macroeconomic indicators such as GDP and inflation to analyses of international trade policy. Students will gain an understanding of the nature and complexity of the global economy. They will also be introduced to the relationship between technological progress and geopolitical tensions in global markets in order to gain a critical perspective on what the future may bring.

With the goal of fostering a critical and transformative vision, the links between the most recent past and our present will be analysed, from the Cold War to the current multipolar world. These connections will be addressed both from the perspective of international states and organisations and through the analysis of the evolution of the most relevant social groups. The course will offer a decentralised vision of the world, emphasising the relations between regions and continents and the potential comparisons between cultural, economic and politically diverse scenarios.

Política i poder avuiPolítica y poder hoyPolitics and Power Today  (3108G04003)

Politics is omnipresent in society. Power manifests itself in many different ways in the context of the modern nation-state and its subsequent transformations. In this course, we will analyse the nature of this power, its mechanisms and how it is distributed, based on concepts such as sovereignty and legitimacy. This political power, especially in the hands of the state, is not without its challenges and is undergoing a continuous process of transformation, through the impact and influence of phenomena such as globalisation, the emergence of new actors and new forms of political participation.

Formes de la terraFormas de la tierraShapes of the Earth  (3108G04005)

Shapes of the Earth is designed as a journey. A journey around the world to identify the shapes of the land and seas and to marvel at their natural cycles, landscapes and wildlife. We will discover how these natural resources have shaped human societies, contributing to multifaceted maps of cultures, languages and beliefs. We will look at the ways rural and urban societies inhabit the planet, both in the global South and North. The journey will not shy away from reflection, criticism and self-criticism. We will see the consequences of the current economic model, geared towards infinite growth, for a finite planet and its most vulnerable inhabitants. We will visit environments exposed to natural and man-made risks and learn about why they are driving a growing number of people to migrate. Throughout the journey we will familiarise ourselves with how humanity is facing challenges and dilemmas such as those posed by the loss of biodiversity, the sustainability of cities and food security.

Geopolítica i seguretat globalGeopolítica y seguridad globalGeopolitics and Global Security  (3108G04008)

As a starting point will be the foundations and evolution of geopolitical theory and practise over more than a century of existence will be outlined, and along with this, we will be looking at how the concept of security and the ways it is developed in international relations, institutions and in specific conflicts has been constructed and modified. We will then move on to the core content of the course: starting, for example, with the World Economic Forum's proposal regarding what are considered to be ‘global risks’: environmental change, access to food and water, raw materials, pandemics, cyber security, state failure, population displacement, etc. As these risks question security, they will be discussed from a critical perspective, looking at who puts them forward and who they threaten. Through the analysis of specific cases, we will see how these manifest themselves geopolitically.

Societats i paisatges culturalsSociedades y paisajes culturalesPeople and Cultural Landscapes  (3108G04009)

The landscape is the cultural expression of a society on a particular part of the earth's surface. In this sense, the landscape reflects numerous tensions in the ever complex relations between society and environment: between the identity values that the landscape holds and the homogenising tendencies of contemporaneity; between natural and cultural values and their commodification; between the risks of museumising and theatricalising certain landscapes, and the essential logic of adapting to social change; between the preservation of ecosystem services and global environmental change. The subject will provide the necessary tools to enable students to grasp and interpret these tensions through a proper reading of the landscapes that reflect them, and will provide the tools available for proper planning and the management of those landscapes.

We will reflect on how imperialism has shaped global structures and how those legacies continue to evolve in the 21st century. Mitjans de comunicació i globalització culturalMedios de comunicación y globalización culturalMedia and Cultural Globalization  (3108G04012)

A subject that involves reflection based on the analysis of real cases and that will focus on the evolution of the parameters of the communication paradigm. The media industry is perfectly suited to contributing to cultural globalisation. The fact that technology has become relatively inexpensive makes it easy to create content and ensure that it goes viral. Both specialists and people with no training in the field can become prosumers, creating content for an increasingly segmented audience using both traditional and new channels. Thus, we will study the elements that determine the creation of new content through the use of new technologies, and also analyse the creation and spread of fake news or propaganda through the media. We will reflect on how AI is shaping media messages, intellectual property and co-creation, and plagiarism.

Models de negoci sostenible en un context globalModelos de negocio sostenible en un contexto globalSustainable Business Models in a Global Context  (3108G04013)

The course focuses on the types of transformations necessary for global business to move away from extractive business models focused on customer value in the sole pursuit of competitiveness and economic growth. The adoption of sustainable and circular business models was a first step in this direction, but proved insufficient to reduce inequality and environmental degradation. To this end, regenerative business models such as the doughnut economy and post-growth economic transformations are proposed as the most promising ways for global businesses to respect planetary boundaries while ensuring minimum social standards.

Acció de política públicaAcción de política públicaPublic Policy in Action  (3108G04014)

Public policy is everything that is decided or not decided, usually by governments (but not exclusively) in response to public problems. Therefore, understanding and analysing public policy not only allows us to understand the most socially relevant values, but also how they conflict with each other. In this course, you will explore the theoretical foundations that determine how policies are formulated, including identifying and constructing problems, agenda setting and decision-making. You will learn to classify different types of policies and understand the key role of both state and non-state actors in their development. The course also invites you to analyse real-life cases, offering a critical understanding of contemporary challenges in global public policy and the importance of coordinating resources and networks for effective action.
