Description:
The course studies the clinical physiology of exercise for special population groups. It also covers the design and implementation of exercise programmes for these groups of persons within the framework of a physiotherapy service.

Syllabus

1. BLOCK 1. Exercise as a "medicine": Understanding and development of clinical reasoning, prescription, and safety: defining clinical dosage and prescription variables, monitoring and load management, adherence, behavioural change and practical clinical safety.

2. BLOCK 2. Therapeutic Exercise in Musculoskeletal, Rheumatological Pathology and chronic pain: Exercise in prevalent musculoskeletal and rheumatological pathology. Neurophysiology and effect of therapeutic exercise in chronic pain. Clinical case presentation.

3. BLOCK 3. Therapeutic Exercise in Neurological Pathology: Therapeutic exercise in acquired brain injuries and neurodegenerative diseases. Management and exercise prescription for stroke and traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and dementia. Clinical case presentation.

4. BLOCK 4. Therapeutic Exercise and Mental Health: Therapeutic exercise and benefit between movement and psychological well-being. Designing exercise individual exercise programs for depression, anxiety, and severe mental illness. Clinical case presentation.

5. BLOCK 5. Therapeutic Exercise in Cardiovascular, Oncology disease: Therapeutic exercise in cardiovascular and oncology pathology. Review of clinical guidelines recommendations, minimum effective dose. Clinical case presentation.

6. BLOCK 6. Training Load Control, practical Application and Clinical Case: Internal and external load control and monitoring variables during exercise. Design exercise programs to specific patient-centered functional outcomes, interactive analysis and defense of real-world clinical exercise interventions.

    Grading

    • A minimum mark of 5 of the continuous assessment is required to average it with the Final written exam
    • As a mandatory requirement students must obtain a minimum grade of 3.5 out of 10 on the final exam.
    • A minimum mark of 5 is required to pass the subject in the overall calculation.

    Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
    • Permitted AI: Style correction, visual design, image generation, and support for generating, debugging, or structuring computer code (software and applications).
    • Prohibited AI: Clinical reasoning, decision-making, dosage justification, or clinical case analysis. Physiotherapeutic and theoretical thinking must be 100% the student's own.
    • Restricted AI: It may be used to optimize one's own texts or to develop code, provided that an "AI Use Declaration" is explicitly attached to the assignment indicating which tool was used and for what purpose. The student assumes full responsibility for the final accuracy.

    Specific criteria for the "No show" grade:
    A student who is not presented will be considered a student who does not appear in the continuous assessment or in the final assessment.

    Single Assessment:
    Students who are unable to take part in the continuous assessment system (within the deadlines established by the university) will have the right to a single assessment.
    This assessment will consist of a single final exam that will account for 100% of the grade. This exam will include:
    • A multiple-choice theoretical exam (60% of the exam).
    • The written and structured resolution of a clinical case (40% of the exam), where students must justify the clinical reasoning, control variables, adherence, and dosage of therapeutic exercise.

    Minimum requirements to pass:

    Mentorship

    The tutorials will be carried out in person in the enabled classrooms and also in a virtual way.

    Communication and interaction with students

    Students should communicate with the teachers via email or Moodle. The following official pathway are established to optimize the exchange of information:
    • Course Content Questions: If a student emails a question regarding the subject content, the teacher will not respond in writing. Instead, the following in-person class will begin by explaining and resolving that question on the board for the entire class. This measure aims to centralize learning, avoid repetitive explanations, and encourage classroom attendance.
    • Virtual Campus Forum (Moodle): This will be the priority channel for general course organization matters.
    • Announcements and News Board (Moodle): The teacher will use this channel to send urgent notifications, classroom changes, grade releases, or important reminders. It is the student's responsibility to have notifications enabled and to check Moodle regularly.
    • Institutional Email (sortega@euses.cat): Reserved exclusively for handling matters of a strictly personal, individual academic, or confidential nature. The teacher will try to respond within 24 to 72 business hours. Responses will not be sent during weekends or non-teaching periods.

    Remarks

    Students are reminded that the presentations and slides provided through the Virtual Campus (Moodle) are solely intended as supporting and guiding materials for studying. These documents and outlines do not contain the entirety of the course information.
    During the in-person sessions, the teacher will provide essential oral explanations, clinical reasoning, and practical case resolutions that form an integral part of the subject matter and are, therefore, included on the exam.
    For this reason, continuous class attendance, active attention, and note-taking are highly recommended and fundamental to acquiring the knowledge and successfully passing the course.

    Learning Outcomes:
    By the end of this course, students will be able to:
    • Explain the scientific principles underlying therapeutic exercise as a clinical intervention, including exercise dosage, prescription variables, safety considerations, and clinical reasoning.
    • Assess patient characteristics, functional limitations, and clinical findings to develop safe, individualized therapeutic exercise prescriptions based on current evidence and clinical guidelines.
    • Design evidence-based therapeutic exercise programs for individuals with musculoskeletal, rheumatological, and chronic pain conditions, considering pain mechanisms, functional goals, and patient-specific needs.
    • Develop appropriate exercise interventions for individuals with neurological disorders, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and dementia, according to disease characteristics and rehabilitation objectives.
    • Design individualized therapeutic exercise programs to improve physical and psychological outcomes in individuals with mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and severe mental illness.
    • Prescribe evidence-based exercise interventions for individuals with cardiovascular and oncological conditions, applying current clinical guidelines and the principles of minimum effective dose.
    • Monitor and interpret internal and external training load variables to optimize exercise prescription, ensure patient safety, and promote progression and adherence.
    • Apply behavioural change strategies and patient-centred communication techniques to enhance exercise adherence, self-management, and long-term engagement in therapeutic exercise.
    • Critically analyze, present, and justify therapeutic exercise interventions through the assessment and discussion of complex clinical cases, integrating current evidence, clinical reasoning, and patient-centred decision-making.

    The teaching activities will be carried out through online platforms (theoretical activities, practical activities and simulations of case studies).

    Theoretical part: Case study-based assessment using the Moodle platform. (the assessment rules will be the previously established in the subject)

    Practical part: Short theoretical exam on practical aspects and assessment of skills to perform the techniques by recording the student
