Dani Boix es profesor agregado del Departamento de Ciencias Ambientales e investigador sénior del Instituto de Ecología Acuática de la Universidad de Girona. Su investigación se centra en la ecología de las comunidades acuáticas, principalmente en sistemas lénticos y concretamente las charcas temporales mediterráneas. Esta investigación analiza principalmente el efecto de los factores bióticos y abióticos sobre la composición de las especies y la estructura de la comunidad de estos ecosistemas. En estos ambientes, la variación en la duración del hidroperíodo (importante debido a la imprevisibilidad asociada al clima mediterráneo) implica cambios en los factores abióticos que, a su vez, suponen cambios en la comunidad. La dinámica de las redes tróficas de aguas someras es otro de los temas de su investigación. También se ha interesado en el conocimiento y medición de la biodiversidad y los factores locales, regionales y globales que la determinan. Está implicado en algunos proyectos aplicados que tienen como objetivo la creación y/o restauración de humedales mediterráneos. Estos proyectos persiguen recuperar ecosistemas acuáticos en zonas dónde han desaparecido para así mejorar las poblaciones de especies acuáticas, principalmente las amenazadas como los anfibios o los réptiles acuáticos.
