Thermogravimètrica Analysis

TGA

L’thermogravimètrica analysis it is a technique that it measures the weighty change of a sample when this him heated, cooled or kept constant at a temperature. Its main use is to characterise the composition of materials. The areas of application include plastics, elastomers and thermostable, metals, mineral and ceramic compounds as well as an extensive rank of analysis in the chemical industries and chemists.

Job request

In order to request the analysis of samples for TGA, you have to get yourselves with the staff responsible for the team in touch.

It be necessary to inform of the toxicity and precautions of storage of the samples. If they do not come to search, the surpluses of sample will be destroyed in the deadline of a week from the delivery of results.

How does it work?

The sample to be analysed it stands about the dish of a microbalance and it works in in an oven with a very precise control of temperature.

A programme of temperatures is created depending on the process to monitor (loss of volatile, decomposition...). In the case of a dynamic programme, generally a warming, it be necessary to specify the initial temperature, the final temperature and the speed to the one who is wanted to be made the warming (ºC/ minute). In the case of an isothermal programme, it be necessary to specify the temperature of the isotherm and its duration.

By the inside of the oven a flow of gas that can be oxidising (air or pure oxygen) is made circulate itself or inert (nitrogen or argon) to study oxidatius processes depending on whether they are wanted or not.

During the application of the programme of temperatures, the microbalance registers the weight of the sample in continuum. This way a graph where the weight is represented is obtained from sample depending on the temperature or time.

Applications / Practical cases

Examples of thermal processes that can be moderate through the Thermogravimètrica Analysis:

  • Adsorption and desorption of gases
  • Analysis quantitative (humidity, loads, contents in polymer, materials, etc.
  • Kinetics of the processes of decomposition
  • Sublimation and evaporation
  • Thermal stability
  • Reactions of oxidation and stability to the oxidation
  • Pseudopolymorphism
  • Determination of the temperature of Curie
