UdG Drought Plan

University of Girona

Faced with the extreme and recurring drought situation that Catalonia is suffering from, the University of Girona, as an institution committed to the country and to sustainability, shows its concern for this emergency by developing a plan aimed at managing the uses and consumption of water, an increasingly scarce resource.

The plan, inevitably, must include measures that intensify savings and make more efficient use of all the uses derived from university activity:

  • Healthcare services
  • Gardening and maintenance of spaces
  • Cleaning
  • Sources
  • Laboratories
  • Other services
UdG Drought Plan - Full Report

The UdG wants to attain the following objectives, defined in the “-ERR:REF-NOT-FOUND-Plan to face Drought in the UdG”:

  • Define the specific measures to be applied in a generalised way in all the UdG departments, considering the emergency as a drought situation scenario, despite the fact that there are alerts or exceptional scenarios, as specified in Catalonia’s Special Drought Plan.
  • Ensure that the measures applied allow university activities to be carried out, both in teaching and research as well as in everyday life, without significant effects, and that at the same time allow excess consumption to be corrected in usual practices.
  • Defining the strategies to implicate all the community of the UdG in the attainment of these objectives. These will be reinforced and channelled through the centre’s environmental delegations.
  • Advance in achieving the objectives of the UdG's Environmental Plan.

Some actions implemented:

About the control of leaks

  1. Protocol to systematise the reading of water meters to detect leaks and monitor consumption per building.
  2. Protocol for reporting leaks or breakdowns at specific points: poster installed in the toilets with a QR code through which the user can report a leak through a form.

About saving:

  1. Call for the teaching staff of practical sessions to ask in a simple way for a grant for the acquisition of equipment for saving water in the laboratories.
  2. Continue with the model of ecological gardening based on xerogardening, for the maintenance of green areas.
  3. Total elimination of sprinkler irrigation; if applicable, maintain the facility through occasional subsistence irrigation or drip replacement.
  4. Stoppage of drip irrigation of the Hort Ecosolidari.
  5. Information and awareness campaign: eco-advice for the networks

MANAGEMENT INSTRUCTION NUMBER 1/2024 ON THE ADOPTION OF MEASURES FOR THE EMERGENCY DROUGHT SITUATION IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL PLAN OF THE UdG, OF 21 SEPTEMBER 2021,

RESOLUTION BY THE RECTOR, OF 2 FEBRUARY 2024, TO ADOPT MEASURES IN RESPONSE TO THE DROUGHT

Protocol to report leaks or faults:

Installation in the toilets a poster with a QR code that people can use to report leaks of faults with a form. This notification will be forwarded to the porter at the centre to follow the usual protocol for these cases.
