Present positions.

Academic formation.- Bachelor in Geology, 1985; Doctorate in Geology (Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain, 1988); and PhD in Hydrology and Water Resources (University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ, United States, 1993).

Teaching/research positions.- Holder of a Research Grant from the Spanish Government (1986-1989). Assistant Professor at the Geology Department of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (1989-1990).

Holder of a Fulbright Scholarship for a PhD program at the University of Arizona (1990-1992). Research and teaching assistantship at the Department of Hydrology and Water Resources at the University of Arizona (1992-1993).

From 1993 to 2006, Professor at the Geology Department at Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). Since 2006, Professor at the Environmental Sciences Department at the University of Girona (UdG).

Visiting researcher at the Department of Air, Soil and Water Resources at UC Davis (USA, 2002, 4 months stay with a grant of the Spanish Ministry of Education).

Since 2013, Senior Professor Researcher at the Catalan Institute for Water Research, ICRA, Area of Resources and Ecosystems, member “Modelling of ecosystems and basins” group (appointment in agreement with the University of Girona research strategies).

Research interests.- Regional hydrogeology dynamics based on field work, hydrochemical and isotopic data, and groundwater flow and transport modeling as well, to determine water resources sustainability under human pressures. So far, research has been focused on three main topics:

  1. The study of large scale hydrogeological flow systems in range-and basin areas to determine hydrological processes and, finally, the availability of water resources.
  2. The study of pollutant occurrence in shallow and deep aquifers, characterizing the hydrogeological and hydrochemical features that control nitrate migration as well as natural attenuation processes. Vulnerability methods, based on field data, GIS, groundwater flow and transport modelling and statistical approaches. Presently, the main interest is focused on emerging organic contaminants, in particular pharmaceutical products, and their natural attenuation in aquifers.
  3. Investigation of the relationship between streams and aquifers as a means to determine the amount of water resources and quality variations under human pressures. Stream and aquifer monitoring based on hydrological approaches and ecological indicators, jointly with numerical modeling, are applied to define the interaction between both water bodies. 

Publications.- Editor of 3 books, and author of 24 book chapters. SCI papers: 54 (78% in Q1-ranked journals); conference proceedings with peer-review approval: 60; other papers in non-indexed journals: 38; contributions to conferences and workshops: 205.

Teaching experience.- Assistant Professor (1989-1990) at the Geology Department of the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Holder of a Fulbright Scholarship at the University of Arizona (1990-1993). From 1993 to 2006, Professor at the Geology Department at Autonomous University of Barcelona. Since 2006, Professor at the Environmental Sciences Department at the University of Girona. Since 2013, Senior Research Professor at the Catalan Institute for Water Research, ICRA.

Other activities: Visiting researcher at the Dept. of Air, Soil and Water Resources at UC Davis (USA, 2002, 4 months), and at the Centre for Soil and Environmental Research, Lincoln University (New Zealand, 2015, 2 months). Active collaboration with Universities Ca Foscari, Venice, and Pavia (Italy), Oxford (UK), Nacional de La Plata (Argentina), and Sfax (Tunis) for the last 20 years.

Memberships and positions.- Member of the Catalan Climate Change Experts Group (2005 to present), Member of the Hydrology section of the Spanish Commission for Geophysics and Geodesy (2005 to present); Vice-President of Tracers in Hydrogeology Commission of the Int. Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS-IUGG; 2012-2019). Associate Editor of Hydrogeology Journal (Springer, Q1, since 2019). Member of the Executive Board of the International Association of Hydrogeologists - Spanish Chapter (2022-2026).

Since 1998 to 2002, Coordinator of the Environmental Sciences study program at UAB. Since 2008 to 2012 Coordinator of the Environmental Sciences study program at UdG.

Coordinator of the consolidated research group “Geologia Aplicada i Ambiental (GAiA)” (Applied and Environmental Geology), awarded by the Catalan Government (since 2009).
