Dr. Joaquim Majó Fernández is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Tourism of the University of Girona, where he has been teaching and conducting research since 1993 within the Department of Organization, Business Management and Product Design. He holds a Master’s degree in Computer Engineering and a PhD from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC).
He has held several institutional positions, including Dean of the Faculty of Tourism (2016–2024), Vice-Dean, Vice-Rector for Technological Development and Institutional Affairs, Director of the University School of Tourism, Director of the Master’s Degree in Tourism Management and Planning, and Delegate of the Rector for Affiliated Centres, a position he held under four rectors between 2001 and 2016. In this role, he participated in numerous university degree verification and accreditation processes, as well as in the monitoring and improvement of study programmes in affiliated centres.
Since 1993, he has been linked to the former Official School of Tourism of the Government of Catalonia, which later became the Faculty of Tourism of the University of Girona. He played an active role in the transformation of TEAT into the Diploma in Tourism and the subsequent implementation of the Bachelor’s Degree in Tourism, processes that laid the foundations for the current structure of tourism education at the UdG. He has also contributed to the design and implementation of other academic programmes, such as the Master’s in Tourism Management and Planning, the Master’s in Cultural Tourism, the Bachelor’s in Advertising and Public Relations, and the Bachelor’s in Global Studies.
In 2004, he coordinated the White Paper on the Bachelor’s Degree in Tourism, developed by ANECA, which served as a reference for the definition of university-level tourism studies in Spain. He was also one of the founders of the Conference of Deans and Directors of Tourism in Spain (CEDTUR), where he served as Vice-President.
His teaching focuses on information and communication technologies (ICT) and their application to tourism and business management.
His research interests include digitalisation and knowledge management in tourism, particularly regarding tourist information offices and information systems. In recent years, he has extended his work to gastronomic tourism and educational innovation. He has taken part in several international projects, including: TEMPUS-LMPH (2013) – tourism education in Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Moldova. Erasmus+ INCOME Tourism (2017–2021) – dual training in tourism. Erasmus+ CAMPMASTER (2020–2023) – sustainable development of campsites. Erasmus+ CULTSENSE (2019–2024) – cultural awareness among young travellers. Dual-Transversalis (2015–2018) – cross-border professional competencies. European Network for University Apprenticeship (ENUA, 2022–2025) – improvement of university work-based learning.
He has also collaborated on educational cooperation projects in Mexico and Peru.
