The study of medicine and literature is an emerging field that is gaining importance in medical programmes. Although the relationship between these two disciplines was very close historically, the scientific development gradually separated them. Recent interest in this interdisciplinary study leads researchers to argue that the study of literature contributes to being a better physician. Indeed, it reinforces some of the fundamental skills that physicians employ in clinical diagnoses, such as organizing and making sense of dispersed information on a patient, and constructing arguments for or against certain diagnoses. Furthermore, exposure to the critical analysis of literary texts helps students to develop transferable skills and attitudes that are essential in their career as researchers and clinicians. This elective focuses on introducing some of the literary works pertinent to medicine and aims at contributing to an all-round education and broadening the perspectives of the students.
